    March 30 and substantial growth

I'd bet money that deer has a hormone imbalance of some sort.

Great podcast to listen to! Steve Hansen on the Land Podcast

You could also limit the scope options. Certain muzzleloader seasons are blackpowder and open sights or 1x scope. That effectively makes any blackpowder gun a 100 yard max, and even that distance takes lots of practice with open sights.

Great podcast to listen to! Steve Hansen on the Land Podcast

I'd love it. Make it actually a traditional season- blackpowder and open sights (or 1x scope). Leave crossbows there but limit the scope magnification.

    Raccon bounty

They'll respond to calls year round. We always use "coon squalls". If you've ever heard two coons fighting in the dawn/dusk treestand time then you know the sound. We've put out the furry spinning decoy too and that'll suck them right into like 10 yards. Make a setup, call a couple in (or not)...

    Raccon bounty

Also, everyone talks about trapping but if you've never tried calling coons, it's a blast. It's pretty easy too. A guy can thin out a large population with a cheap electronic (or even hand held) call and a 22mag or shotgun. Throw in some dog proof traps or even a thermal and you're going to be...

Great podcast to listen to! Steve Hansen on the Land Podcast

We'd never get it back. Just like taxes and gov regulation- once it's on the books, there's no going back. Also, I wish people would understand that the DNR aren't the ones we are fighting. They are hamstrung by the legislature on most issues we care about. Their hands are forced on things...

    Farmer brush cleared too much.

Ahh I missed that, thought the northern "green" was staying in corn/bean rotation. Yes, I would definitely do a grain there then.

    Farmer brush cleared too much.

First, I'd have a conversation about what was discussed vs what was actually done...that's something that can get out of hand if not addressed. For the blue, I'd go ahead and get some crop history with future CRP in mind since you've already discussed that with FSA. Yellow looks like it could be...

    Raccon bounty

I'm not a huge fan of bounties. In modern times there hasn't been a program that has shown any success statistically. SD program doesn't have sufficient monitoring to show success or failure. It's a money pit. The biggest thing is- where does the money come from? DNR budget? The one that is...

House File 2015 - Landowner Tag Changes

Anyone I know there that doesn't strictly gun hunt does just that. Their landowner tags are also floating. I'm not saying they are a bastion of good management for mature bucks but these types of tags are out there in the midwest.

    Pheasant rebound…

Things to consider- pheasants need three types of cover throughout the year to survive and propagate. (1) nesting cover in late spring to hide/protect the nest and the hen (2) brood rearing cover in summer that is fairly open at the ground level to allow chicks to move freely with a "canopy" to...

    Trespass fines increasing ?

I'm not a fan of Shipley overall, but I'm glad he mentioned shed poaching in there! Almost 100% of our trespassing issues are in the spring for sheds and mushrooms, Glad to see it and I hope to put it to use personally...

House File 2015 - Landowner Tag Changes

It exists. Nebraska is a good example. They have a statewide, season floating "restricted" (i.e. whitetail only) buck tag, open from September 1-Dec 31. I think its about $80 for residents and open to NR too, obviously at a much higher price point.

    Bird population in your area

I've got two spots I hunt. Decent in southwest IA, private and public. Pockets of really good, pockets of pretty sparce. Very good in Appanoose county.

    New to Iowa

We've been hammered relentlessly with EHD each year but its some beautiful country and a decent amount of public. Maybe not the trophy buck density of say SE IA but it's been a great place to call home. Welcome to IA!

Buck nubs starting - left some cams out…

Ran into three nice bucks while turkey hunting, one I can recognize by his face and torn ear that will be 7.5++ this year. I was happy with the thick nubs but they had nothing like that yet!

    New to Iowa

Now that's a great way to get a feel for the state! If you ever make it to the southwest corner I'd be happy to buy you a beer and show you around the Loess Hills.

FOREST RESERVE DISCUSSION & DEBATE!! (Renamed)

IBA,, ISC, and SKIP keep on winning in Des Moines! You all should be extremely proud of what you've done over the last two sessions especially. I'm just proud to simply be an IBA and ISC member. I would also encourage everyone to know when their representatives are having public forums. My...

FOREST RESERVE DISCUSSION & DEBATE!! (Renamed)

I loathe the "not paying their fair share" argument. Property taxes are the epitome of "you own nothing" government kick in the face
