CRP Offers Wildlife Benefits
Jul 27, 2010 - 4:58 PM - by blake
From the Iowa DNR:

CRP Offers Wildlife Benefits and Improves Water Quality

Hot muggy summer weather now is only a few months on either side of last winter's extra heavy snow...and whatever lies ahead this winter. There was alarm raised late last winter, as pheasant and other wildlife losses mounted, in areas with long-lasting snow cover and sub-freezing temperatures.

Then and now, the best solution was - is - better year-round habitat. Larry and Sheila Gould, of Sigourney, can watch the payoff right from their backyard. "We discussed putting this 80 acres into the Conservation Reserve Program," recalls Gould. "For the wildlife, too, but for our benefit; to look out over the ground."

"This is a classic example of a good-hearted person trying to help a wild creature," said IDPH Medical Director, Dr. Patricia Quinlisk. "Unfortunately, even the cutest of wild animals can carry a variety of diseases that are harmful to humans and other animals. In Iowa, skunks are the reservoir for the rabies virus and all Iowa skunks should be considered potentially rabid. "

Time-Consider CRP
Jul 08, 2010 - 5:58 PM - by blake
Note: This is a joint press release from the U.S.D.A. Farm Service Agency, the U.S.D.A. Natural Resources Conservation Service and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

Now is the Time - Consider the Conservation Reserve

DES MOINES - Now's the time to think about putting that wet area, steep side slope or other unproductive land into the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP).

"With a general sign-up coming sometime this year, producers and landowners have time to do the math and figure out if those hard-to-farm areas are really paying off," said John R. Whitaker, state executive director of the Iowa Farm Service Agency. "Our agency has increased rental rates since the last general sign-up, making CRP a more attractive alternative.

"When you pencil it out, sometimes the cost of planting and replanting, or high costs and low... [Read More]
