I was wondering if it is legal to make antler traps in Iowa. Ive seen things in magazines where people put up lil fences and put corn around it to when a deer goes to eat he gets his antlers caught and youve got the shed. I just wanted to know if it was legal or not.

numba1,
It is legal but you must understand that antler traps are ment to help drop antlers that are ready to shed. When bucks come in to feed they knock there antlers into the trap, be it fencing, posts or whatever, this helps free already loose antlers. It is never legal to catch deer by the antler in hopes he pulls his antler free. Hope this answers your question.

I had no intentions on trying to make a deer get caught or anything I just want to help them drop antlers that are ready to come off. I would never try to cause harm to any deer unless of course Ive got a tag to harvest the deer. Would anyone happen to have any dates on when deer start to drop their antlers because I wouldnt want to put the trap up until the deer are ready to drop them.

numba1hunta, I have 3 of the antler traps from atlas wildlife. I've seen their banner at the top of this site. I've never found a shed in the bucket. But i will say I have found some sheds within 50 yards of the trap. They have large rubber bands, so when the deer sticks his head in the bucket his antlers are in the rubber bands and when he pulls his head back if the antlers are ready to shed they supposedly fall off. With the rubber bands if they become tangled they just back up and the rubber bands stretch and pop back off the antlers. I have found the rubber bands popped off the trap. I got them at the deer classic last year and by the time I got them put out into places that the found them and were using them regualrly it was early march and most of the deer had already shed their antlers. I will be putting them out in a few weeks to get the feeding pattern established earlier. Hopefully I will have a banner year this year. Good luck to you and your shed hunting. Like Mike said the best advice is to go as often as you can. Chris

About 5 years ago I used to dump corn around a corner fence post. But after hearing stories about deer getting caught in fences, I stopped that. I used to stake two bales of hay or straw about 8 to 10 inches apart and put corn and oats in the center of that. In hopes of the bucks constant rubbing of the antlers on the bales, would cause the antlers to fall off. This didn't work to bad, I found a few sheds in the area around the bales. Only problem is the bales don't last to long as they eat them and climb all over them. Not to mention the bucks tearing them up with their antlers. Then I became worried that they might get impaled on the stakes that held the bales down. I have 3 of Atlas Wildlife antler traps. I got them so late in the season last year that I really haven't seen if they work that well. I do know they do feed out of them. I've had to replace the rubber bands on all of them at least once and one of them twice. I never found a shed on the trap, but have found some in the nearby area. I think just having a food source that you keep stocked regularly. That you will find your success will increase. The best tip I can give you is go as much as you can.

Three stakes and chickenwire is all you need. Put the stakes in a triangle shape angling outward and then wrap the wire. Good Luck
