Our research has shown that sheds are collected as early as dec 15 in your area, however the majority begin around jan. 12 well after the earliest or latyest born yearling does have had a cycle to breed. We personally have seen many bucks, big & small, holding antlers in to late march and to mid april. More facts and stuff on our site.www.antlertrap.net. Happy Hunting
quote:
Originally posted by thegeneral:

A trace in central Iowa. Where was the shed found that you mentioned in yesterdays post?

My advise is to be in the woods as much as possible, period. You can find sheds anytime of the year. Last week while muzzleloading I found a large 4 pt shed from this spring. A friend hunting the same ground as I, found a large spring shed from a 160" deer and also a matched pair of 100" 8 pt antlers from THIS fall. All were from South Central IA. So get out there and keep your eyes pealed. Good luck.

I found a matched set of horns tonight. They are a 8 point in the 130 class. They were 50 yards apart in a bean field...

I didn't think a shed hunter ever stopped looking. http://www.iowawhitetail.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif I start watching for sheds the last part of December while bowhunting. If I am in a good area for any reason from Jan till the middle of March, I will walk around the area. I also do alot of scouting to keep track of where the deer are feeding and if the bucks are still carrying. From the middle of March till green up, every free moment my son and I have are spent tromping around the countryside looking for sheds.

Last year we found 70 whitetail sheds and a moose shed. Here's a picture of most of them.

I was replying to the original poster's question... when to start looking?? All the sheds in the picture were fresh last spring. http://www.iowawhitetail.com/ubb/images/icons/wink.gif So far this winter, all the bucks I have seen are carrying both sides or have a busted off side. Saw 6 tonight bowhunting and they looked very attached to their racks yet.

Same here, however friend has got one a few days ago. small rack without any xtra pedicle material, however he is in Montana and uses a Shed Hunter unit. They usually loosen antlers a week or so sooner. Thanks and great find with all your sheds.
quote:
Originally posted by TJF:

I heard from a guy in the western part of ND and he says that they are seeing some big older bucks with one side only. One of his friends arrowed a 145 class buck last week. When he went to grab the antlers, they both popped off. I bet he was bummed.

The bucks I have been seeing lately are 3.5 or younger, so I am not surprised they are still carrying both sides. It will be the hard rutting older bucks that are run down, that really should shed first. Stress is the number one factor in my book that decides when a buck sheds.

ISHEDHUNT
Congrats on finding the shed. Even if it is not fresh, they are fun to find and I always keep a lookout for them no matter what time of the year. There are couple mates to sheds we found last spring that I had hoped to find while out hunting this fall. The buck that wore one of the sheds made it through hunting season, so I am really hoping to find his sheds this year too. Congrats again.

TJF, FOUND THAT AREAS THAT DON'T USUALLY HOLD LARGE NUMBERS OF DEER HAVE EARLIEST SHEDDING OR AT LEAST LOOSENING OF SHEDS EARLY. nO LATE OR EARLY BORNS FOR LATE SEASON MATING. nO PHYSILOGICAL NEED FOR ANTLERS.
i GOT A MOOSE SHED IT'S SOME WHERE IN OUR PHOTOGALLERY ON SHED HUNTER/ANTLER TRAP SITE.

Tim the shed I found yesterday, I have the mate to it. Last year in Iowa I found 72 whitetail sheds. After a trip to Canada I found 16 whitetail and 11 elk sheds. So far this year no fresh sheds, but I have found 7 from last year. I also have a friend at work that found the mate to the 88+ non typical found last year. This shed is chewed alittle, but 6pt frame is 85 typical and with the triple brow it should score close to 90 non typical. Tim what state are you in? Just curious, from your posts it didn't sound like Iowa.

Tim I've never shed hunted in North Dakota, but have in South Dakota when I'm Antelope hunting up there. I have found some decent whitetail and mule deer sheds and racks while up there. That close to Canada do you ever get up there. I drive through the eastern edge of North Dakota on my way to Manitoba. I think if I lived closer I would try to make a couple of trips up there a year. Gary when I get back to work I'll send you some photos and I'll take some photos of what I have so far this year. I'll talk with you later Chris

Tim I kinda got off to a good start my first find was a super fresh 85 6/8 non typical. I looked for several years before I ever came close to finding a shed score wise that rivaled my first find. Hopefully this is your year for a 70+ shed. Chris

I am from North Dakota. Sounds like you guys have some big sheds down there. I'm still trying to find one that breaks 70. We have a good deer population, but there just aren't the big racks like you have in my immediate area.
