View Full Version : Big Shed Contest
We're thinking about having a "Big Shed Contest"...
This would be NOT be exclusive to Iowa sheds but since most of our readers are residents we'll probably see a bunch.
Anyway, something like " the most total inches - one side" for one category and "the most total inches for a matched set, using 18" for inside spread".
What do you guys think? Gary with ShedHunterAntlerTrap (http://www.antlertrap.net) said he would throw in a AT100 Shedhunter for each of the two categories.
This years sheds, 2002 that is, and does includes sheds already found.
Wanna play?

The price is right. I'm in for sure!

Im in. Ill be lucky to find one let alone a big one!!
Any handicap for states not know for huge racks?? I'm thinking 30 a side for my state would be fair. http://www.iowawhitetail.com/ubb/images/icons/wink.gif Seriously a contest sounds fine to me but I think you should make them submit a photo of the shed to qualify for the contest. Not that I don't trust anyone, I just want to see some huge sheds. http://www.iowawhitetail.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif Goodluck to everyone!!

Sounds like fun. If iowawhitetail.com puts this on I'll chip in a free, Zach encore print ($50 value) for the winner in each category. Winners can pick from Old Rivals I, II, III, Big City Bucks or Big Timber Bucks.

Have you noticed how I've kept my mouth shut? Well, just take a look at the names on this list. You can't hardly give yourself a snows balls chance but count me in. One thing for certain, this little group of shed hunters will produce the type of sheds that take your breath away. Good luck to all.

Bent,
Thanks for your contribution and I must say it's a real honor to have you on the site.
I have gotten to know a friend of yours the past fews, Mike Borle, also a first rate guy and dedicated shedder.
If I can work out the time I might be coming up to Alberta this Spring.
Nice site by the way, I really enjoy the photography link.
Thanks again,

Hey Bent I have your video it's great. My wife makes fun of your accent though and thinks the video is boring. What does she know?! Haven't watched it for a couple years, maybe I'll go dig it out and get pumped up.

Count em in too.....How about a catagory for the smallest shed. That takes a well trained Eye to find them.
One thing that might help get some pics on the Conference is you should be able to post your "shed finds" along the way.
Example,
You find a nice 4 point shed today and post the pic, measures 64 inches. Next month you find a nice 5 point shed that scores 74 inches and you post that pic, etc.
The last week of the contest up to the last day you post your biggest shed or match into the contest.
Maybe this will help shedders post there finds YTD and beyond.
Iowa deer classic is having a shed contest and display for first time this weekend. Also shed hunting seminar.

That is an outstanding typical shed, the mass is great and I love huge brow tines!
Normally I've spent a few days on the deer trails by now, but work is keeping me out of town and out of the shed hunting game. But, there are some great sheds coming out of the Edmonton Bow Zone, found by the Lander family. Jeff Lander is a good friend and we shed hunt together a dozen or more days a year, give or take.
The Landers have been going out as a family this year and are having a banner season. They have come up with 3 fresh matched sets. The first is a 150 class 5x4 that Jeff has a great deercam photo of. Jeff found both sheds together in standing oats.
The second is a 170 class 4x4 with a split G2. Jeff found one side and his daughter Rachel found the other, 80 yards away.
The third set is a true Alberta HOG! The set has a 5x5 frame, with a huge split brow tine on the right side, and triple brows plus a 6-inch drop tine on the left. Both sides are in the 85-86 range, and he'd be about 18-20 inside. That's just a shade under 190 inches, what a deer! Once again, Jeff found one side and Rachel found the other, about a week apart. What makes these sheds an even greater find is that Jeff has a deercam photo of this buck at such close range that you can't even see his whole rack!
Although Jeff and I have a bet of our own each year, I'm glad they got off to a good start. They're going to need it!
Once again congrats to the shed hunter that found the 83 inch bone, what a shed.

Hey,got to tell ya a story on the smallest shed.My friend and I were shed hunting,it was his first time at it.I found one that was a 4 pt. and was a little chewed. After a little while I could hear my buddy yelling like hell. When I finally made it to him,I said let me see it.I looked as he held up the smallest 4-pt. I had ever seen in my life.I laughed so hard I got a belly acke.It was really a cute little thing.I name it the pigme buck.I did tell him I was sorry for laughing so much and he started to laugh with me.

Just came up with the other side to my first find.Unfortunatly this side is broken off just past the G3 tine.It still scores 68 though.I've been watching this buck for some time (ie two years) and when he showed up over the weekend without his headgear I had a pretty good idea where to find them. The first came from near his bedding area but not right in it. The second which I found this morning was located on his travel route to his feeding area,a picked cornfield. This is an Iowa buck. I'll post a picture of the second side soon. And if my son can remeber how to pull a still picture off my camcorder maybe a picture of how those sheds looked in November!
Hey, Bent You might as well send me one of your vidieos right now!! No just joking.I will however put together some footage of this and a few other bucks I've filmed the last couple years and give to the winner of each contest.(est. value Priceless!!!!!)Later,

Hey Jay glad to see you on here. I have a 3 beamed shed that I want to show you. I'll bring it Saturday. Oh by the welcome to Iowawhitetail.com
Chris
numba1hunter,
Here is some information on the contest. I don't think anyone is looking for it to be a full blown "Big Shed" contest with entries from all over North America, prizes for 1st,2nd,3rd and 4th place, etc. We all know the sheds are the "best prize of all" and heck if you do find a monster and it measures up the biggest you get a "Shedhunter" and Old Buck is throwing in a print.
I bet we make it all work out in the end, thanks for checking though.
When you boys find out who wins the video in the shed contest, give me the winners name and address and I will mail it to them.
Thanks Bentley Coben
