I was flying to Fort Madison from Iowa City today. We were flying about 900/1000 feet AGL due to the strong southerly winds. Unfrotuatly when you fly this low, even though we were only doing about 85/90 mph you don't get long to look at what you spot. Several miles north of Fort Madison I was doing my usual deer, turkey, Oliver and Jeep scouting when I saw what looked like a brand new hog feeder in the middle if a cleared point. Looked like CRP ground. But it just didn't look like all the other million of hog feeders I've seen from the air. About thirty seconds later I spotted another in about the same type of set up. Very good deer habitat as evedenced by the deer that were walking tword it. As my mind worked on what I saw it dawned on me that they maybe antler traps of some kind. They were approx 4' in diameter and around the top was some stuff that looked like white plastic. It must have been rigid because it wasn't blowing in the wind. I really didn't get that gooda look and I am relying on the "snap shot" that is in my memory. I was on the wrong side of the aircraft on the way back to spot them again, plus I was a little busier on the return trip.
Anybody ever seen anything like this? I think it probably works cause I saw several deer moving twords it. It was about 15 yards from the timber.
Those were the only deer I saw but we spotted 5 Bald Eagles on the way down as well as three differnt groups of Turkyes, probably a total of 40.
Just thought I'd share.
