Boy, you sure whooped me! Last spring a turkey scouting operation turned into a shed find, I found 4 antlers ranging from 46 to 60 inches. I was pumped as it was the first time I'd ever found antlers. http://www.iowawhitetail.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif

My best year gave me 46 sheds, with another 14 dead bucks on top of that. My highest scoring shed ever was found that year that measured an even 100 0/8".

My biggest typical shed is a 5-point beauty that scores 85 inches even. The biggest non-typical that I've stumbled on to date scores a shade over 90 inches.

As for numbers I've never really kept track but I imagine my average is 30-40 sheds annually. And that's with a fair number of hours on the deer trails! We don't have the deer numbers that you fellas do in the midwest, but we always have the possibility of the 'holy grail' as my buddy Jeff Lander puts it.

Good luck to all in 2002.

A 5pt that was a shade under 66 is our biggest. 70 deer sheds is the most we found and that was last year. My goal is to find something that scores over 70 and we are 69 sheds away from tieing last years record. Got to think positive!! http://www.iowawhitetail.com/ubb/images/icons/wink.gif

My personel best is 90 1/8 typical, 101 and a few/8 nontypical, 2 net B&C's on the same day, on 2 different occations. Over 60 w/t sheds in 1 day. 26 w/t sheds in a point of a small aspen bluff in a few min. with no match sets. 7 match sets in 1 day on 2 different occations. One of those days, 5 out of the 7 match sets were side by side. But the best of all is a buck we nick named Big Larry. I found 1 of his 2nd years antlers that day in the small aspen bluff and I never found the match. One day a gentleman stopped by for a visit, by the name of Gerhard Stuewe. When he spotted this shed it caught his attention, as he had a fresh match set from this same buck. We became friends shareing our ideas and thoughts with each other on shed hunting. As the years past, we kept finding antlers from this same buck, Gerhard would find one I would find another one. Then one day I found 2 more sheds from this great deer. One from the 7th year and one from his 5th year. They scored around 77 inches, one may of been 76. One cold winter day my son Blake and I were on our way shed hunting when we noticed Gerhard, when we got closer his beard was white with frost and he had a smile that said it was worth the pain for the gain, as in his back pack he had a shed from Big Larry that had 6 typical points and net scored 93 inches and another shed that scored over 70 inches. Talk about hit the deer trails hard. We looked all that year, many hours but with no success. The next winter, when he was 9 years old, Gerhard found another left antler from this great w/t. It had went back to only having 5 points, with a score of around 80 inches. In May of that year, on one of our last outings , I was LUCKY enough to find the match to the 93 incher. Less than 100 yards from where Gerhard had found it, points up on the edge of the aspen bluff, a place I had walked by many times. The sun must of been shinning just right that day and the deer gods were with me. We did the shed antler dance a few times with some back slapping. He grossed over 190 and netted 173. That fall while out hunting, Gerhard stumbled on to him, eaten up by mr. coyote and was happy to put his tag on him. We are not sure if he was wounded by a hunter or killed by another buck. His typical frame netted over 170, but he grew a sticker that kept in out of the book. Then the next year in May, just about to the day as when we matched up the 8th year, I was lucky enough to find the match for the 9th year. It had 6 points on the right side this year and the set netted 175 typical points. Gerhard, my 2 dogs and I were out that great day. 15 antlers from one deer, that scores over 170 on the 5th,6th, gross on the 7th but falls a little short for net. then again on the 8th and 9th years. None of the match sets are fresh, except for the 3rd year. They can be veiwed on my shed hunting video, Treasures In The Buck Brush. You can enter in the Big Shed Contest and win one of these videos or buy one at www.bentleycoben.com. (http://www.bentleycoben.com.) On the 101 incher I found, Garry Donald found the match. He was was 6 years old that year, he gross 225, nets 219. I have his 4th year also, were he nets 197. I have the ones from his 3rd year too and they are big, having one side scoring 80 inches with 5 points and I have the ones from when he was 2 and they are nice. I lost a shed from him, when he was one. It had 6 points, plus a sticker. I also lost the shed off the world record this summer for 2 and half months. I looked many days in the shed pile without success, then when I got home from work, off night shift, I went to the shed pile and looked untill I foung it. Scary feeling, but it was there. It was as good a feeling, finding that shed that day, as any I have ever found. These collection, antlers from the same bucks year after year can only come together with, honesty, fellowship, with yourself, your friends and the land owners that make it possible, for us to enjoy this great sport of SHED HUNTING.

Hi Bent -- I want you to know that the story of Big Larry and other tremendous shed antlers from Saskatchewan as captured in Big Buck Magazine are the main reason I started shed hunting back in the early 90's.

So, in a way I owe hundreds and hundreds of hours of enjoyment to a few dedicated shed hunters such as yourself and Garry, and all of the other fanatics from your neck of the woods.

There are always a few individuals in any field of endeavour that influence and encourage others, and I hope you know that you are such a person in the shed hunting community of western Canada.

You should really consider a shed hunting book, it would be a great addition to your video and would sell like hotcakes to the right market. I'd buy one, that's for sure.

PS. What has your area produced so far this year for good sheds? Good luck this year!

Bent,
It good to have you and NW using the site. You have influenced me and my interest in whitetail sheds even though I was hunting sheds years before I ever heard of you. One day by chance I saw your early video with shed hunting success like I never will experience and I was impressed and continue to be impressed. I'm glad you guys visit the sight and share in what can only be described as an obsession.

I stopped by Preston and Perry's last night. They had a 5x5 that netted 170 and Preston found a 6 point that scored 85 plus it 2 stickers to put it over 90 inches. The boys are picking a few great sheds. I haven't really got at it to hard. Waiting for my little buddies from down south to get here and find a few. Good luck to a couple hard core shed hunters in Gods country.

PERSONAL BEST FOR A YEAR, 36. THAT SAME YEAR MY DAILY BEST WAS 26! FOUND 16 IN ON FOOD LOT (HAY) 4 WERE MATCHING SETS. LARGEST SET I FOUND 6 YEARS AGO. LT=79 3/8" RT 86 1/8" WITH PROBABLY ABOUT A 19" SPREAD. 2 YEARS AGO ABOUT A MILE FROM WHERE I FOUND THESE I PICKED UP ANOTHER MATCHED SET. THE G4 WAS HALF GONE AND I GUESS ABOUT 3-4" OF THE G2 ON THE RIGHT SIDE WAS CHEWED OFF TOO. BUT THEY MEASURED RT 73 6/8 LT 77 5/8, THIS BUCK TOO PROBABLY WAS ABOUT 19-20" WIDE. SAME GENETICS I FIGURE.

My personal best are a set of sheds found in March 00'. One side scored 90"+ typical, with 13" nt scored 103". The matching side scored 81"+ typical, with 12" nt scored scored 93". With an estimated inside spread of 19", net scores around 206 nt. An awesome find! I returned to the exact spot in spring 01' and found a matched pair of 150" ten point sheds. Not what I was hoping for, but still made my day. I'd guess I average around 25-30 sheds per year. 3 so far this year.

My best typical shed is 82 (MN 1999) inches. Non-typical is 87 (MN 94) inches. Best set is a 160 class 4x4 (MN 99). I had watched this buck for 3 days and on the 4th morning he dropped them 100 yards from where I had been parking my pickup. That was sweet! Most sheds in one year is 109 (1999). Most in one day is 28 (Sask.), 16 of those came from one area and a 45 minute run through the bush. Most sets in one day is 3 (MN 99), all side by side. Most sets in a year 14 (1999). I've been hoofing several trips a year to Canada for some time now and after writing this I have realized that most of my better sheds/years have been right here at home.

I too have enjoyed Bent's shed antlers that have graced the pages of Big Buck Magazine. When it comes to shed antlers I don't think you can beat Big Buck Magazine. The first antler I ever found scored 85 & 7/8 non typical. I've found several between 85-95 non typical, still haven't been able to crack the magical 100 inch barrier though. The largest typial I've ever found is a 80 and change 5pt. I believe my best find was a locked set of antlers. They were in North American Whitetail January 1997. My son is shown holding them, he was 2 at the time. He's now 7 and loves the outdoors.
By the way both of these bucks net under 100 inches. One is a 9pt the other a 10pt. As far as totals for the season, last year was my best in Iowa, 72 sheds.
I also found 27 in Canada last year for a total of 99 sheds. In 1999 I found 47 in Iowa and 75 in Canada in 3 days. Thats my best year total of 122. I know it pales in comparision to Bent, but I'm dreaming of the day I find them like him. Hey Bent I think its about time to make another shed hunting video. I've just about worn my copy out. Would love to see a photo of your whole collection if possible.

When I started shed hunting there was sheds laying all over the place. With the competition now a days it is a little harder to come up with as many as we use to pick up. But we still find a few. The mule deer seem to be moving into our area more every year. Not complaining but those big whitetail sheds are nice to pick up. We didn't pick up a mule deer shed untill in the 90's. Now we have soom of the greatest mule deer in the world. I went through some of sheds on the weekend. I have 16 foot walls in my addition. I hung up over 50 sets of mule deer sheds that score between 175 to 240. I took a few photos. Maybe next week I will get to sorting some of the whitetails out and hang some of them up. They look awsome hanging up so you can really see them. Some of them I had not seen for years as they were at the bottom of the piles. I have the first shed hunters coming on the 8th of March, so we will have to see how they do this year. It will be thier fourth time up and they really put on the miles, but that is what it takes to find a big one.

The best part of making the shed hunting video was going out with my son and our friends, we stated shed hunting together when he was about the same age as your son. Both my sons have left the nest, but they still take the time to come home and go on an adventure to the buck brush with thier dear old dad to see if we can hang another set on the wall. The pile of antlers that we have, comes from a good group effert, sharing and trading antlers with each other has greatly helped put nice series together.
That must of been a great trip you had to Canada, finding 75 in 3 days. Have you found your best sheds at home or on trips?

Bent,
I've found my best sheds in Iowa. I think the biggest whitetail shed I've found in Canada was around 65 inches typical, 16 of the 27 last year were whitetail sheds in Canada and out of those 16. I found 6 matched sets. I will say the matched sets I found in Canada seem to be alot closer than the ones I find in Iowa. I did find 16 matched sets last year. We have such a problem with rodents down here that sheds don't last very long. I couldn't believe the amount of older sheds I have found in Canada.
Like you said the competion for sheds gets more and more each year. I can remember 5 years ago I never saw anyone out shed hunting. Every place I've been in this year has had other footprints.
Thanks Bent for replying. One of these years I'm going to make it up there and hunt with you.

No never in Saskatchewan. Prior to a bear hunt in Ontario in 1995. I called and talked to you and you had told me of some public ground that I could hunt on. I barely made it through the bear hunt, got sick. I had planned on spending a few days in each province shed hunting my way to Alberta. I wished I would have been able to make that hunt I had set aside 2 weeks to shed hunt, instead I spent itgetting well. I've been in Ontario, Alerta and Manitobia. I'm going to try and make it up to the southern part of Alberta and Saskatchewan this year. Hopefully late March or early April, depending on snow cover.

In response to this invitation, I brought my set of "world class" sheds only to be denied permission to put them in the shed room. I had no intention of scoring them or entering them into any contest, just wanted to share them with everyone. I was dissapointed to say the least, especially when later on in the show I noticed they had placed several more sheds in the room after I was told there was no room for additional sheds.

I think that was because you had yours mounted, and there was only room on the floor for loose sheds to sit. You should have said something to me when you brought them in and I may have been able to do something. I didn't realize that you wanted them in the shed room. Sorry! Good luck this spring and keep me posted.

The biggest shed i ever "found" was on the south dakota , wyoming border. we stopped to look around at an antique store and if you've ever been in one you'll know they usually have a little box or place with some some horns. well i was looking at them and i seen a pretty big single horn from a mule deer.i looked at the base and seen it was a shed. it was white with a broken tip but i liked it so i was going to buy it for i think 5 dollars so i showed it to my dad and he gave me three dollars and said go see if you can get for less son i came back with it.
the beam -19 inches
the g1-2inches
the g2-11 inches with 5 iches broke off
the g3-8 6/8 inches
the g4-4 4/8 inches

This is the first year that I've been into it too hard. I've picked up sheds in the past but I rarely went out looking for them. I guess I have beginners luck as I've picked up around 40, many of them small to medium size but I picked up a 5 pt set with split g1's that scored 86 right, 79 left. I also picked up a huge 5 pt with a split g2. It grosses almost 95" with the non typical point. I won't say I'm an expert measurer but I was lucky enough to shoot a 205 gross non typ. with my muzzleloader this year and I rough scored it at 199. The official Henry Kelsey scorer found 6 more inches so I'm sure I'm a bit off, one way or the other. Anyways, those 3 sheds are my biggest so far but I'm starting to go hard in hopes for more.
