I watched a buck two weeks ago actually drop his left side as he took off running away from me towards evening. He only had the left side when I saw him and it turns out another shedder in the area picked up his right side that morning. The buck is a typical 5x5--left side scores 58 3/8" and the right is 60 4/8" so he will be a dandy next year. After witnessing him shedding one side, I am curious how many other serious deer/shed hunters have actually witnessed shedding on wild deer. I spend many hours just watching the deer herds during the "ripe" shedding periods and have only seen this happen one other time. Any other shedding witnesses out there?

I always dream about jumping a huge whitetail buck and as he runs away, both of his antlers fall off. That's just a dream though, I doubt it will ever happen LOL!

Several years ago I was watching 5 mulie bucks that were bedded about 100 yds. away. They were all carrying both sides. They spooked and ran into a low area that I lost site of them in. When they came out, one was only carrying one side. I went in and picked it up. That's the closest I've ever come to seeing them fall off.

Shovelbuck, that's exactly what happened on my "other" experience several years ago as I watched a 2 1\2 year old whitetail. Until this year, that's the closest I had been to seeing a deer shed.

Dec. 26th 1999 I was walking around the outside of a known bedding area hoping to confirm with tracks that the bigger bucks were using the area when I jumped a 140 class 4x4 that was bedded on the outside edge. At about the 40 yard mark the buck took a left and it seemed as if he caught his rack on a willow bush, enough to jerk his head back and I "thought" I seen the antler fall. Not to sure but figured I had better look and sure enough, he left me a nice 63 inch side. I remember the date because it was the first shed I got that year and it sticks out because I seen it fall. I hunted this area hard that year and another date I have in my records is April 3rd 1999, that's when I found the other side.

I haven't ever witnessed a deer shed, but two of my friends have. About five years ago my friend was driving over to my house when a 6pt ran out in front of his car, he honked his horn. And the buck bolted across the road, one antler fell off just as the buck crossed the road. My friend stopped his car and picke dup the 3pt side, probably the freshiest antler he will ever find.
Two years ago my buddy was watching a group of 6 bucks almost everynight. The biggest was a 140" 10pt, one night while watching the 10pt, my friend picked up his other spotting scope and noticed the buck only had one side, moments before he had full rack. The next day he went and asked for permission to walk, went up to where the buck was standing along the woods and picked up the nice 5pt side.

I've never seen one shed, but a friend was bow hunting in late January when a buck and doe approached, the doe jumped a fence followed by the buck. When the buck hit the frozen ground on the other side his only antler popped off, a very nice four point.

Last year while watching a rather large group of deer from the road in late February I observed a decent buck along with some other deer literally running around and through the herd in circles. Anyway at one point the buck jumped back over a fence and left a 57" 5pt side behind for me. He really made that to easy for me but I'm not picky.
