View Full Version : ? for Bent.
Hey Bent, I know you are a world class shed hunter and I'm fairly new to it but crazy for it and having great luck this year. I have picked up over 50 sheds so far but I've found very few sets. What do you do when you find an antler to try and find the match? Do I continue to cover ground I've already covered if I'm sure it's nearby?

Are you ever having a great year. The matches should be within 300 yards, but in some cases they are as far away as two miles away. If you are finding the sheds in the fields and the bedding areas are a mile away a few of the matches could be there. If you are looking in the buck brush or poplars they are harder to spot and they are usually close and in most cases hard to find the match, but don't give up because Big Larry was hard to find the matches to every year and the matches to this deer were always close. Many of my bigger sheds have taken me more than one season to find the matches. It makes me sick that they have to turn white before I can find them. Going back to the same area gets a little tired after a while but it is worth it when you finally locate it. I have been looking for the match for the world record for five years now but the last thing I am going to do is give up. I guess I haven't looked hard enough yet. And I believe I will find it sooner or later but I can't find it if I give up. Keep up the Good work.
I scored two deer from the biggar area this fall that net scored 181 and 1814/8 typical, the area gets shed hunted, but I beleive there are many antlers left to be picked up. We picked up over 300 antlers in that area last spring alone, and I hope to find that many there again this spring. There are a lot of people looking for antlers in the province these days, some for the money and others just for the thrill of picking up an antler. There is a lot of country in that area with a great deer herd and with a lot of effort a guy can still pick up a few antlers. The boys from Biggar showes us this fall that there could still be a few more in that area to look for yet.
I get down to Kyle once in a while to pick antlers with Wade Luchsinger. They still have a good deer herd there as a few great deer have been shot in that area in the last couple of years.
If you are in the area stop by and if the time is right we may be able to get out and look for a few antlers.
Thanks for the info Bent, it makes me a bit more confident getting some advice from someone like you. I know the area you most likely shed hunt has some awesome bucks as I grew up in Kyle and going back and forth from there to U of S I saw many good bucks over the year. I am going down to Biggar at Easter as that's where my fiance is from as well as my uncles who hunt alot and I hope to do some shed hunting down there. Do you think that many people from the Stoon area get out there much or will my chances for finding sheds on private land that I have access to be alright. Maybe I'll get down to your area someday and we could get together and do some searching.
It has been slow, the deer are taking their time parting with their antlers. Our snow was gone, but in the last couple of weeks we have had a few flurries which makes them harder to spot compared with no snow. They had a little more in the Biggar area but I believe nothing compared to what you have. Good luck on the weekend.
Bent, how is the shed hunting going down there? Is there much snow around to hinder your success. Lots of snow up here has slowed things down alot. I'm hoping to do some looking at Biggar next weekend and then around Kyle during my easter break and I'm hoping the snow doesn't screw me up. Best of luck!
