I am pretty new to this sport of shed hunting and Im wondering how many hours a year a normal shed hunter spends in the woods. What would be the average date someone should start looking for them and what month would you stop searching?
I have put in fifty or so hours already this year and only found one,but with this snow coming and going as it has this past three weekends its very hard to find the right time to get out.
Also how effective is it to walk public ground around bigger cities? Any sugestions would be helpful!!!!!

I average 6 to 8 hours per shed on average years. Serious shed hunters will log hundreds of hours every season. This is my worst year in 15 years. I can only get out on weekends so the last several weeks here in NW Iowa have made it bad for finding sheds even if you can manage get out. I do see several deer still packing so that helps.
Big city sheds are very common and it ranks as one of the best places to pick up monster sheds.
I really can't give you an average of hours everyone spends shed hunting. That depends on each person. I will spend about 200 hours a year scouting bucks/looking for sheds.
Generally I will start watching for sheds the end of December and start looking for them by the middle of Febuary. Generally by June things have greened up and we are done looking for sheds for the most part. Truth be told, depending on how much you enjoy it, I don't think you ever stop looking or hoping you come across a shed. I know I don't as I found a few during the summer or while hunting in the fall. I would imagine there are quite a few on here that can say the same.

I think you never quit looking also. Heck I can't even walk the dogs in the summer without scanning the woods. Even while driving I'm allways searching the fields and fences. But to answer your question I probably spend arround 10 hours per shed. I've gone weeks without finding any but you cant give up. You never know the all time monster shed might be laying out there just waiting to be picked up. (Or eaten if you dont get out there.) Good luck. Buck

Thanks for the replys guys, Im heading out this morning into the hilly Losess Hills area and I dont think to many people walk that public ground. Hopefully I can find the big 16 pointers shed down there that my friend saw a many times turkey hunting but I never laid eyes on him.

Arcblade as of today, I have 260+ hours in. I found a matched 5 x 5 set today and 2 4pt sides. I've found 55 so far. Not as many big ones as last year though. Only 4 sheds over 70 inches. Good luck to the rest of you.

I usually spend a couple hours 3 or 4 times a week after work on my ride home looking. On the weekends during the peak shed hunting times I will spend several hours both days looking.I stop looking everyday during april or when it gets to green and the ticks get to bad although I never completely stop looking.
