I was just curious how many droptine sheds you've found while shed hunting, and how long is the longest droptine on those sheds?

Kansan,
Thats an easy one, "0". I have one bow kill 12 point with balanced 5" droptines off the main beam and thats it. Last year I was hunting a B&C buck with one 11" drop off his right side but never got a shot, never found his sheds. Droptine racks are very rare in my area but I'm rather fond of the droptine trait.

Mike, in a few weeks I should be getting back my biggest matched set of sheds, and there's a drop on the right side. I'm really excited to get them on a cape and on the wall! I'll post pics when I get it back.

I have a matched set of mule deer sheds that have a drop tine on each antler. The one on the right is 6" and the one on the left is 9".

Over the years I've found two different deer dead that had drop tines. One was a big 11 point with a 5 inch drop tine. The second is a typical 8 point frame with about a nine inch drop tine. This particular buck scores 149 and 6/8th's.The drop tine is long enough that it acts like a kick stand and keeps the skull from falling over.

The only drop tine I have had the privlege of hunting, (prior to last year)was kind enough to leave it about 30 yd's from one of my stands. Nothing like a little salt in the wound. I never saw the deer again, I believe he was taken by a rifle hunter the next Nov.
It's about a 70" antler the drop tine is about 4". That was three years ago. the other interesting thing is that I found the match to it this fall while blood trailing a deer a friend had shot. After two years, still solid, only a little chew on the end, and about 200 yd's from where I found the drop.

My dad and I were spring turkey hunting back in 1993 when we stumbled upon this shed up in Winneshiek County —Â*the first either of us had ever found. Call it beginner's luck, I guess! It was fourth season turkey in early May when we happened across it laying in an open grass field. Needless to say, we were both pretty excited at the time and still are to this day when recalling how we found it together that day. It grosses around 76 inches and the droptine is around 5 1/2 inches long. It is the only droptine shed I've ever had the priviledge of finding. Just thought I'd share a pic., even though it was taken while holding the camera in my other hand!!! Good shed hunting to all of you!!!

Here are a few of my droptine sheds. The one mounted is my best antler I have ever found, it has 4 droptines with the longest one 6 4/8 inches. Garry Donald found the match. In the other photo, the one shed has a 13 4/8 droptine and a 12 6/8 browtine. The match set scores 175, the droptine on the left antler is 8 4/8 inches long, this is my best double droptine match set I have ever found. The one on the upper right scores 93 inches, has an 8 inch droptine and I believe it is off the buck, shot last year in Saskatchewan that made the front cover of the last issue of North American Whitetail. Droptine sheds are sure hard to come by and when I walk up to one I get a thrill second to none. Every year one of my client usually finds one of these freaks of nature and they cherish them as if they just won the lottery.

This is a shed I found about 15 years ago.I never scored it.Truth is I would'nt know where to begin.Im not sure if you would say it has two main beams and a drop tine or a drop tine and a up tine.I was searching an area near George Washingtons hunting lodge. The area was a very thick brier tangle and I saw this shed from about 30 yards away.At first I thought it was two racks locked together. As I got closer I realized it was something even more special.I searched high and low but never found the other side or even caught a glimpse of this deer.
The shed has a yellow tint to it because as soon as I found it my dad claimed it.It sat in his basement for about 12 years he smokes and it colored the shed yellow. My dad wanted to make a lamp out of it.I had to tell him if he hurt it in anyway Id have to kill him.
Maybe one of you good people could give me some advice on which way I could score this thing.

I've found a total of 3 droptine sheds in all my years of walking the deer trails. 2 of them were found on the same day, on the same 1/4 section of land!

Here's a picture of a 75 inch single that I found last year, with a 6-inch drop tine.

http://www.northernoutfitting.com/images/olddropper.jpg

And this matched set, complete with drop tine, was found 1/2 hour later.

http://www.northernoutfitting.com/images/germansnontyp.jpg

I also found a 60 inch 4-point about 6 or 8 years ago with a 4-inch drop tine.

Thanks Bent. Right now is a really busy time at work so there is not much spare time but hopefully I can make it up later on this spring or summer. I would love to see your collection, any photos I have seen look awesome. Thanks again.
