View Full Version : Antler In a Tree

My friend Argo found this chewed up antler in a tree about 5 feet off the ground. I am not sure whether a squirrel carried it up the tree or if the buck left it there. One of the chew marks on the underside of the antler is caught on the small branch below the antler.

It is probably one of the most unique spots I have seen a shed antler found.

I posted a couple more new shed antler pictures on my website. The 62 inch 6 point was found today and was dropped within the last 3 days.

Alot of the time when I find a chewed shed if I'm not gonna bring it home I will hang it in a tree.Just to sorta mark my territory.I do the same thing with doe skulls and buck skulls that I am not interested in taking home. Then I can also tell from a distance that I have check that particuler area.

Last year during turkey season my brother found a 6 point shed (65") hanging on a fence. I wonder if someone put it there or if a buck droped it right on the fence.

I'm quite sure this was not done by a human. If it was, they were trespassing.

I have found sheds in prior years by checking where squirrels run from when I see them. I actually caught one chewing on one side of a matched set that was laying 2 feet apart. He already had the G4 devoured.

Shedmanpyro.

I will do the same with skull of bucks and does we find. I either stick them about 5 or 6 feet up in a tree or put them on top of rock piles here. I just haven't figure out why I like doing that. Maybe subconsciously I'm marking my territory, paying respects to the deer, want other hunters to share my find, or make them wonder how the hell it got up there. Knowing me it's probably the 1st and last reason. http://www.iowawhitetail.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif

A few years back I found a shed hanging on a fence near a fence crossing. I assumed it dropped and happened to hang there naturally, but I suppose someone could have put there too after reading all of your stories! Guess I'll never know for sure — another of nature's mysteries! Also, I once found a small four-point shed laying on a downed tree with the match laying next to the tree on the ground. That's still probably one of my most unique finds.

Nice picture DC. My friend found a nice 4pt hanging on a tree branch a few years ago. And last year I found a nice 5pt laying in some bushes next to a cedar tree. In your case, I bet that buck dropped his antler in that tree, while passing through or eating browse.

DC,
that's a pretty cool website. i really like the 110 inch non-typical shed found in 1985.

I not only hang the skulls in small trees but I put my initials and date on them for future reference and to make others wonder "what's up with this"?

Thanks Youngbuck. I try hard to keep the site updated with recent events, be it sheds, deer hunting, or turkey hunting.

Are you from the Iowa City/Cedar Rapids area?

Andy, me and my dads huntin partner found this skull hanging in some saplings in a river bottom. We kind of figured from condition that it had been in the river and when the river came up it just got caught in the trees because there is no way someone would just hang this skull in the tree. There is kind of a story behind it too. Andy had been down in the bottom helping my dad find his deer he had just shot and seen antlers and thought it was a deer standing there. He said it scared him, and took him a while to figure out it was just a skull because he couldnt see it all that well. He scored about mid 130's

Through the years I've found two antlers in sapplings and small trees. My thinking is that once a antler is off they want the other off and sometimes will pull it out like a tooth.

This saturday I found a little three point shed (fresh) hanging in a tree. I have a picture of it, but I am not sure how to post it.
