I'm certain that all of us own more than one knife, but if you could have only one, what would be your favorite "Go To" knife?

Although I make my own plus generally have several with me, the knife that get's the most use is my Gerber Magnum LST. I've had it since the mid 80's and it has never let me down. It will easily field dress three deer, including splitting the pelvis and skinning before it needs touched up.

I LOVE my buck knives- no problems or complaints, I also like them far better than many of the other brands I've had. They are made in the USA VS many others in china or wherever- pretty sure at least. I'm sure there's other great ones BUT 0 complaints with my Buck knives!

Love my Buck knives. Use them everytime I am out hunting. The best looking knife I have would have to be a bone handled knife I got from Shovel.

I'm very partial to my Vanguard. It's pretty tough to beat that drop point blade when it come to field dressing and skinning large game.

I carry that Buck and a folding Gerber saw in my pack on every hunt.

In the kitchen I like to have a razor sharp filet knife for cutting loins, steaks, and roasts. The little Rapala branded ones you can buy at Wally World do a pretty good job. I don't even know what I'd buy if I wanted to "upgrade" to a better filet knife.

Funny, I bought a knife at walmart with the winchester name on it. Not sure who makes it for them. It has a gut hook on it, and a wood handle. It was only $15 and I figured it may last a year maybe 2. I have had it for 5 hunting seasons now, and it has held an edge great. The edge out of the package sucked, and I had a friend sharpen it the second year and have not had to do anything to it the last 3. I was shocked. Have used it to gut and skin multiple deer each year. It is due for sharpening now, but I always make sure it is in my pack when I head out hunting.

Carried a Schrade Old Timer Delrin Muskrat folding knife for years (field to freezer use), but after I almost lost it for the second time and since it has great sentimental value to me, I stopped carrying it. Now I carry a Buck Woodsman sheath knife.

Gerber Gator is by far the best knife I've ever handles. It holds an edge forever, sharpens easlily, fits my hand very nicely, and the rubber handle will not slpi even when wet or bloody. The blade is solid in the handle so there is no play, it locks solidly. Its my favorite and my go to.

I agree Limb. My wife spent a lot of money about a year before we were married and bought a large set of their kitchen knives. I thought it was senseless at the time. 34 years later they are still going strong.
I've seen their hunting knives in the catalog before but never knew anybody that used them.

Keep them coming guys. This is a fun post.:way:

I really like this one . I am tired of folding knives, as they are hard to clean, and I want a knife ready to use, with just the pull out of the sheath feature. The Buck Van Guard. Made in USA. Lifetime warranty, Sure grip handle, perfectly balanced, razor sharp, hard steel. They also come in a beautiful rosewood handle, but I wanted functional with good grip for good handleing with blood and fat on my hand, instead of pretty. $60...... 5 out of 5 review on this site also.

I have become fond of my buck for deer but as far as my knife with history goes, I have carried a very thin 4 blade Swiss Amy for over 25 years. I have lost 3 and alway have to go searching for the same knife. Thanks to the Web that has become easier. I have on more than one occasion dressed deer with it because I had forgotten hunting knife.

This is my hunting knife, a Buck Kalinga. This knife has skinned many a deer over the years. It holds an edge well and it isn’t all that hard to get a nice sharp shaving edge on it.

It is not however my overall favorite knife, I will post a photo of it later.

My brother-in-law, being German, turned me onto a Puma Hunters Companion about 8 years ago. I think I paid 50 or 60 dollars for it at the time. Definitly worth the money, although I don't hear of many other people owning them.

Blake - My dad has one of those knives, it is simply awesome. I was going to buy one just because of their awesomeness but Dad said to just wait it out, I'll have one eventually. That wasn't the best way to tell me I'm getting one some day, but it'll be a good keepsake.

:way: I agree with everything dc240nt said above. I have had mine going on 5 years and was disappointed when they stopped making the lock blade style. I would also be lost without my Gerber hand saw/bone saw combo. All very good products. When the meat gets bones and sliced it gets done like Bukket said with a cheap Wal-Mart Rapala 6 inch fillet knife. I love how quick and easy they take an edge with a good steel.

The 6 inch Rapala fillet knives are great for most boning out, I prefer the 9 inchers for popping out the backstraps though. For $10 you can dang near use them for a couple years and then just buy new ones instead of getting them sharpened.

Had it for about 10 years now and am just sending it in for sharpening (which is free). I have beat the ever livin .... out of this knife and it is still sharp enough to gut a deer.

You can't sharpen the double D edge but you don't need to.

I'm a diehard Buck knife user, although my Gerbers are a close second. My Vanguard is probably my most reliable go-to knife for all things hunting, but my 119 is my favorite go to for all around circumstances. I've used it to chop brush, small limbs, etc. and I've had to unsheath it a few times in self defense with border crossers and an upset mountain lion. Luckily, nothing came of any situation, but to know its there and will do its job is my biggest comfort. I'll never be without a Buck within easy reach!

A little known Cliff Clavin fact that Don use to be the mayor in Cedar Rapids. I have a couple of his knives and they are great. Handle gets a little slick but they are a work of art that is for sure.

The other two knifes that I use are the Cabela's Outfitter Series. I've got one they don't even carry anymore and also the caping knife. These knives are scary sharp.

Had a Schrade Old Timer growing up and I sure wish I still had that knife. Can't ever have too many knives. :D

I like my Schrade Old Timer Sharp Finger model 152. Schrade either went outta business or sold out to somebody and they quit making them for a few years. They started making them again in China. Steel didn’t feel as good and the edge sucked. I bought two of the knock offs without looking at them. Junk. I bought them for gifts. I never gave them away. I have since found a few original 152s at gun shows NIB. I have enough to keep me in knives for a few years. I lose knifes about as fast as I lose hair.
For around the house/acreage I carry a Schrade Old Timer 340T three blade folder. I got it at a gun show in a set with a sharp finger. I do have to say that the stainless in both knives is a little lacking. I didn’t clean the folder after peeling an apple and it got rusty. I lost the Sharp Finger in my driveway in the snow once. Found it a couple of weeks later and the blade didn’t rust but it got a very nice patina to it.
My “dress knife” is a Buck 505 “Knight”. Looks good with silver bolsters and wood inlays. I have owned several of these but I lose these more often than I change underwear.
My work knife, besides the Buck 505, is a Gerber spring assist clip knife. Part of “The Answer” series. I bought this knife a few months ago, that’s right, I lost my other one. I think my seat belt hooked on the clip and pulled it out of my pocket. It probably fell out of the helicopter and landed on the ground so somewhere in Iowa is an inexpensive clip knife waiting to be picked up. This is my first spring assisted knife. I like the idea of one handed opening and closing.
My ultimate goal is to get my blacksmithing shop set up, make some pattern welded/damascus blanks and make a Sharp Finger.

I like my Schrade Old Timer Sharp Finger

I own two of them and never use them. I bought one and somehow acquired the other from a college roommate (circa 1984). I might sell them.

I don't like the shape of the knife. I want a very long slender blade that is able to "reach in" and cut the anal canal free so that it can be pulled back into the body cavity while field dressing. I'm not an advocate of splitting the pelvis to accomplish this feat.

Funny, that is exactly why I like the sharp finger. The point curves up and I think I can cut around the butt eaiser because with the curve more of the blade comes in contact not just the tip of the point. I also don't like to split the pelvis but if I did the sharp finger would be a bit wimpy for this.

This skinning knife was made for me by a good friend and co-worker. He really is very talented with all aspects of blacksmithing. I love the "clouds" in the blade on this one. Its almost too pretty to use but I do anyway. He even made the sheath and used some antler that I gave him. It is very sharp and fits my hand perfect for skinning. :way:
