Missouri Senator wants more Penalties in Hunting Deaths

(AP) — A Missouri lawmaker is pushing tougher penalties for hunters who accidentally kill someone.

Under existing law, the state Conservation Commission may suspend the hunting privileges of any hunter who causes an accidental death for up to five years. Legislation by Senate Majority Leader Tom Dempsey would double that to 10 years.

Dempsey, a Republican from St. Charles, says the longer suspensions are needed so that hunters understand the seriousness of killing someone, even if it is an accident.

Dempsey said a constituent asked him to seek the tougher penalty after her husband was accidentally shot and killed in 2008 while hunting turkey with a friend.

Not too bad of an idea. There are obviously some accidents that are unavoidable, but how many hunting accidents could be avoided if the person behind the bullet was just a little more careful. Would be pretty pathetic though if it took threatening your hunting rights to make someone not risk killing a buddy.

When jerks shoot out a timber with a 30 round ar to drive deer out of it I'd say life or worse should be the penality rather than woops it was a hunting accident.

How else are you supposed to get the deer off the neighbors property? :D
