    2014 rule change

I agree with NWBuck..Call me an old fart but 2013 was my 50th year as a deer hunter in this state. The DNR knows exactly how to grow the deer herd if they are serious about it, or if they are allowed to may be a better way to put it. In the 70's and 80's getting a doe tag was like winning...

    Open letter to the Governor

Im with you. They can put out as many doe tags as they want, and have as many doe seasons as they like, but we don't have to shoot them. We the hunters can make a big difference, if we unite.

    nontypical vs typical scoring question

Your Buck is a perfect example of why so many don't like this scoring system.

    nontypical vs typical scoring question

I would like to see that also, but doubt pope & young or B&C will ever add that. There are other scoring methods that do reward total inches of antler, but without credit for inside spread.

    nontypical vs typical scoring question

Well I will do some research..I had not heard they went back to the 15. I will say this. When someone gives you the score of a nontypical many times it is simply the total inches of the rack. This is sort of a trend I have seen over the last decade or so. There is not an entry for this number on...

    nontypical vs typical scoring question

If a buck has at least one abnormal point, Pope and Young permits it to be scored as either a typical or non-typical at the discretion of the hunter. Boone and Crockett requires 15 inches of abnormal antler in order to be scored as a non-typical.

Experience with deer movement in bitter cold?

One of the best times to hunt them if you can handle the weather. They can become very predictable. If your after an old Buck be patient, they can hook up with a bunch of deer in bad weather on a food source, and become vulnerable, but usually the last ones to arrive, sometimes with just a few...

    Guess gross score

My guess is 197 with everything all added up, not sure whats hiding on that right side G2. I would guess about 186 NT net, and 169 Typ gross. Great Deer.

    Alsheimer rut predictions

I have shot quite a few Bucks the first week of November. Most of them were 3 1/2 yr olds when I first started bow hunting. As the years have gone by and I have become more particular about what I shoot, my best success with the bigger deer I've taken has been from around the 10th of November...

I have both of those books also. Would like to meet him. Try Amazon.com. They may have both of them.

    Non- recorded RECORD BOOK BUCKS

That's too bad, I thought it was probably something along those lines. I remember Lee Gladfelter. He scored one of my deer in the early 80's.

    Non- recorded RECORD BOOK BUCKS

Like I said in an earlier post I have no problem scoring a rack and have entered several of my bigger ones. But, It seems as though the Iowa record book at least, doesn't get updated, or corrected on a very regular basis. For example, take a look at the number 1 typical shotgun Buck, its score...

    Non- recorded RECORD BOOK BUCKS

I've seen where several scorers will get together and score a rack when there are some tough calls on a rack that become somewhat a judgement call. But a 188 would not have to be panel scored.

    Non- recorded RECORD BOOK BUCKS

I have entered some of mine into P&Y and have some more I want to enter but just haven't got around to it. There is no doubt a lot of big deer do not make it into the book. The P&Y and B&C clubs don't get the respect they did 15-20 yrs ago. I don't claim to know why. I have scored my share of...

    Non- recorded RECORD BOOK BUCKS

14 Booners with a Bow is quite an accomplishment. Hes probably the only person in the world that has done it. He should be getting a free bow every year at least. And I doubt its been done with a gun either.

    new moultrie trail cam

I'll give it a look, I've had good luck with Moultries, got six of them. I'm not a big fan of C batteries either but, three of my Moultries are D-55s and they hibernate until something gets in front of the lens. I use Duracells in them and they last 6-8 weeks at least. Problem is I don't think...

Buck Quality in Iowa over the last 5, 10, 20 years??

In the areas I hunt its as good or better than it ever has been for older deer. These are areas that I have hunted for over 40 years. Two reasons IMO. One is the simple fact that there are simply more deer than there were, although the population has leveled off now. The other reason that is...

    Bedding Areas

Yes for sure. Nothing is more exciting to me than setting in a bedding area with a hot doe around. You can be second guessing yourself one minute about coming to the stand your in, and the next minute you can have a couple of real Bruisers standing in front of you. Two seasons ago I had a 160...

    Bedding Areas

I think we may be talkin apples and oranges a bit. IMO trying to take a mature buck in HIS bedding area early in the season or prerut is a lot different, than trying to take him in a doe bedding area during the rut. Hes about as vulnerable as he is ever going to be, when he is tending a doe...

    Bedding Areas

I don't want this to sound like a brag deal, and sorry if it does, but I have had some good success by hunting either on the edge or right in the middle of doe bedding areas. A 155,160, two 167's a 166nt, 171nt, 173, plus some others, all were tending a doe. Its a short lived proposition, by...
