    Locker's

I've taken my meat to Mark's Locker in Rowley for several years. They do a great job for a reasonable price.

How are the shot gunners doing?

Not meaning to "stir the pot", but do you think the DNR would have an issue if the buck was tagged on the back leg vs the antler? It might be tagged, just in the wrong spot like some of the others in the pictures.

    Any luck with scents?

Using scents cost me a realluy nice buck this weekend. He was locked in coming into my rattle/grunt calls on a steady walk. Wind was quatering right to left towards me He was waliking with the wind at his back quartering towards me. Drew my bow when he was 20 yards behind a tree. Kept...

Preparation is the Key to good Venison

I always soak my deer steaks in salt water twice, 24 hours in the fridge each time. They are a very light pink when I'm done. I then put the steaks in Teriyaki with Pinapple Lawry's marinade for another 24 hours and then put them on the grill making sure not to overcook. The result is the...

    non resident deer help

Check out Yellow River Forest units in Allamakee county. Some big bucks running around up there and a ton of public area to choose from. A guy should be able to get away from other hunters during bow season. Shotgun season gets busier but if a guy is willing to get off the beaten path and...

    Deer blind orange requirement question

I've seen on a popular hunting website the hunter just hanging a blaze orange vest on a tree next to their blind. Does that meet this requirement? I wouldn't think so but I guess how is that different than if the hunter was just sitting outside next to the blind?

    Muck Q

I bought a pair of the Muck Woddy Elite's last year and love them and they keep my feet warm all season. Only question is how to get the neoprene smell out of them? I've washed them in scent free soap, let them sit outside for weeks and put earth scent waferss inside them in a closed tote and...

    Heads UP,Another Mild Winter:

I pulled two ticks off of me during first shotgun season. Pretty sure I got them while skinning out a deer. Chiggers are the ones I hate the most, southern Iowa seems to be full of them, I got them real bad this summer and was miserable for weeks. I have never run into them in central Iowa...

    Whats the best tires

I second the Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armor tires. They are noticably quiter than the Cooper AT tires I had. The last set I bought was a set of 4 Cooper AT tires that had a 50,000 warranty on them. Rotated them as required to keep my warranty and only got 38,000 miles out of them before they...

    Stolen stands and ladders

I use a log chain and padlock on all my stands and pull out the bottom 3 pegs on my hang-ons. Seems to stop most individuals but if they want it bad enough they will still find a way.

    Need some reassurance here

Sat all day yesterday in a funnel near a bedding area in SE Iowa. Saw 6 deer total all day. Nothing moved after 9:00. Only seen a doe with two fawns and 3 small bucks just walking along. Seen more deer driving in the dark to and from my stand then I did all day. Definately big boys moving...

    Unused Deer Tag Survey

BOWMAKER Thanks for the stats, what year did the online/call in reporting begin. My bet you will see a big drop in harvest numbers in the year that started.

    Unused Deer Tag Survey

So here's a question: If everyone who had an unused tag and called in that they shot a doe, does that hurt or help the cause of trying to reduce the number of extra tags issued in following years if the numbers are inflated vs what was harvested? Not advocating, just wondering how much...

    Unused Deer Tag Survey

I'd be curious to understand how the DNR uses the harvest information to determine quotas for next year. Would they take a lower than normal number as a sign the numbers are in check and not issue as many antlerless tags next year or would they issue as many because not enough deer were taken...

    Up and Comer

Nice looking buck! Up to you but you won't know how big he will be next year if you shoot him. There's always a chance he'll survive but there isn't if you take him. Always up to the individual on what makes you happy.

    shoot or not to shoot

My philosophy is if you have to think about it when they come by then he isn't big enough. Also if you shoot him he isn't going to get any bigger next year, but if you let him walk there's always a chance.

    Why I don't buy Late Antlerless #'s

Let's be honest if the DNR really wanted to manage the doe heard and have us shoot more does then why don't they give everyone a free doe tag? Why do I have to buy a doe tag for each season? If I buy a doe tag for the bow season and don't fill it why can't I use the same one during first...
