I have a question for EVERYONE. If you shoot a deer and it runs on your neighbours land can you put you gun/bow down and retrieve it with out asking the property owner? I have heard both you have to ask and you can go on their land and retrieve down game. I don't remember where I heard it but some one told me u can't go with out permission so you have to ask the owner. If the owner says no you can call the cops or warden and they will escort you on the land to retrieve your game.

U have the right to retrieve without asking so long as you leave your weapon on your side of the fence

I always ask first. If I get shot down I remind them that I have the right to go get it as long as I don't have a weapon. If that don't work, the DNR gets involved.

Straight from the regs under the Trespass section:

“Trespass” means entering property without the express permission of the owner, lessee or person in lawful possession, with the intent to commit a public offense; to use, remove therefrom, alter, damage, harass, or place anything animate or inanimate, or to hunt, fish or trap on the property. The term trespass does not mean entering the right-ofway of a public road or highway. Railroad right-ofways are considered private property. This paragraph does not prohibit the unarmed pursuit of game or furbearing animals lawfully injured or killed which come to rest on or escape to the property of another

We had out of state pheasant hunters that had a wounded bird on our side. They actually asked before going in after it. Dog found it in about 90 seconds. Thot it was pretty cool that they asked. I've lived here for 30 plus years and still ask permission to hunt the same ground every year. Respect and a little deer jerkey will get ya permission most every time in this area...........ck

IT IS LEGAL for you to leave your gun behind and go retrieve your game. If they confront you try to explain that you have a legal right to get your game if that doesn't work, 911 the cops out there. I always carry a hunting guide when I'm hunting anyway. I also encourage every Iowa hunter to read the guide page to page...........ck
