Agreed. It might be a pain but once you get it down it only takes me like 20 minutes to put 5 sticks and a stand up. I don't have any permanent stands anymore and I hunt almost all private ground and just a few small chunks of public. 1.) Deer can't pattern you and 2.) People can't steal your stuff!

I wasn't trying to start anything. I was just giving a tip based off the knowledge I knew.
 
I know first hand that shooting does is totally different than having a big buck in front of you... I use to shoot every deer high, i have shot 4 deer in the spine! But it was my own fault, i would draw back and let the arrow fly as soon as the pin was behind the shoulder. You HAVE to pick a spot, aim small miss small! Keep your head up kid, you cant pick your neighbors! But on a side note, if you know that you hit the deer bad DO NOT go tracking him right away... Give him time, and an hour is not enough time. I am talking half a day!

Target practice and shooting bucks in the field are much different. You can practice every day all year and still miss when the big boys come through. No substitute for experience in the tree or in the blind!

Keep shooting (practice and out in the field) you are way ahead of many at your young age!!

You need to relax, this is suppose to be fun! Just think you have moved past video games and are actually experiencing something in your life.
The term "that's bowhunting" comes to mind when I hear or read this stuff. Now we get to see what your made of....
Stay positive and make it happen, but again, relax, do your best and let the chips fall where they may.

Tough deal. I'd say that it would be a good idea to develop a set procedure for every time you draw your bow back. Chances are your just getting overly excited and forcing shots a little bit. We have all done it. The main thing is to relax and control your breathing. If you can do that you control your heart rate as well. That all leads to less of the "shakes". Keeping emotions in check at the time if the shot might be the single most important factor because it allows you to focus on other very important areas critical to success.

Ok, so, you superficially wound a buck, he beds 30 yards from the shot, you jump him from his bed. You give him an hour and jump him again. This time you give him more time and jump him again. The next day the buck returns to the stand that you superficially wounded him the day prior, close enough to see the wound?? REALLY?? You may want to leave this part of the story out when telling it to the CO.
 
If that buck bedded down 2 or 3 times that close after being shot then jumped 2 times you might have put a little better shot on him then what you think.

Maybe you need to take some time away from the site! You are getting way to rapped up in this "big buck craze " You seem like a great kid and the best years of your life are happen right in front of your eyes. I'd give anything to go back and relieve my high school days. Quit getting so rapped up in the killing or trying to kill big bucks. They will come young grass hopper. Maybe you need to go out and sit with who ever showed you the ropes of deer hunting. Sit down and think about why you hunt rather than what your going to kill. I was in your shoes once and thought in order to legitimize myself as a hunter I had to produce and kill giant bucks every year. I hate to break it to ya but unless you own or directly know someone with a ton of land you are going to come across way more obstacles in route to killing that deer than say someone who is on the other side of the fence. Guys like us who have to "work" for the ground we hunt are far better off in the long run than say a guy who was handed 200 acres in Decatur County.

Keep your head up and keep after it, if you wound a buck so be it, part of hunting. Learn from your mistakes and keep after it. Good luck kid, you'll be fine! Your in a great part of the state and based on the sheds you've shown off you have plenty of big boys running around. :drink2:
 
In regards to that A-HOLE neighbor, as others have said, let the law know about him threatening to trespass and steal your gear. If they have record of that, they have something to go off of if your gear actually does come up missing. Getting a muddy or Lonewolf set is not a bad idea but I know when I was your age I didnt have the $ for that. Bottom line is you shouldn't have to worry about your gear getting stolen, especially on private ground.

As for the bad shot on the buck, I know you have had some bad history with this happening but as others have stated, don't let it make you want to stop hunting. All you are is a quitter and a loser if you give up after facing adversity. It is a not just a bow hunting lesson but a life lesson! You had the balls to go on this site and write about it, knowing that some guys were going to give you crap, so I know you have what it takes to get back in the stand and drill the next big buck that comes walking by. As Booner stated, focus on why you hunt rather than what you are going to kill. It is obvious you love deer hunting but I think you have let the desire to kill something with big antlers make you forget why you love deer hunting. One thing I do know, if you are not good enough and satisfied without a big deer on your wall, you will never be good enough and satisfied with it!...............The last thing; when you know you made a marginal shot, for the love of god, back out and give it at least 6 hours, if not more, depending on where you hit. We all know how bad you want to go after it but IMO that is something you know better than and totally Fed up on.

Yes, I saw him thay night actually. I feel better than if I wounded him or gut shot him. I don't ever want to do that again. I won't go out in the field this week I'm going to practice even on Saturday. Sunday will be the next day I go on. What I've been doing is shooting 1 arrow each hour at random yardage and its made me a way better shot.

I understand why some of you think I've been shooting and wounding millions of deer. I don't know if I said it but last year when Cooter gave me hell for a bad shot on my youth season buck it got to me and I fixed what was wrong. I've shot 3 bucks and 5 does since then. 3 Of them were with my bow. I've changed the ways I've been shooting bow and shotgun and decided I'm a trophy hunter this year not a meat hunter like last. I may be a kid but I might not even be in the state in a year and a half. Which is why I want to shoot a good deer this year.

You're also telling me go out with the guy who taught me. I am every day.


Edit: This wasn't even about the deer it was just getting the information about what happened out.

If someone wounded a deer and it ran on to our property I would gladly help them go find it. I would hope though that they could at least show me evidence of where the deer crossed onto my property. I know the rules and wouldn't deny anyone access , but I would ask if there was no sign how they were going to track or find it.
It would be tough for me to watch someone just go wondering around in the areas we leave alone all year as a sanctuary's, if they have no sign what so ever to follow.

3 bucks and 5 does since last year? How do you get that many tags?
 
There are ways to shoot alot more than 3 bucks in a season, not saying I agreed with it 100% but a very lucky guy with a willing group during shotgun season could shoot as many bucks as the group has buck tags.
1 youth tag
1 state wide archery tag
1 any gun season he wanted tag
Ill let TH give the details but I'm guessing those are his 3 any sex tags. And he may have even qualified for a landowners tag...
 
Pretty sure you cant get both youth any sex and gun any sex tag(s), Also could of shot multiple bucks during shotgun season (party hunting= multiple tags)

Every time I see a post by him it's the same stories with a few different twists. Has posted some shed find stories that weren't to bad.

Sure you got the right guy? I don't remember him ever posting anything on here about wounding deer and I think he's from Minnesota?
