Crossbows soon to be legal???

The true effective range of a crossbow should be 35 to 40 yrds max. More like 20 to 30. Short bow and short heavy arrows sink in flight fast. Compound bows can easily shoot much farther. I know there are stories of guys shooting long distances but they really shouldn't. That is true with all weapons and people that push the limits. The tide of other states will eventually come to Iowa. Won't bother me a bit.

I agree with you on the range 100%. The issue is this, it is easy to push the limits of your weapon when you are looking through a scope while rested on a shooting rail... Especially if you are use to shotgun or ML and shooting 150+ yards. The jump from 30-50 doesn't seem like much when you are use to firing a slug vs. and arrow or bolt

on the surface, i would agree with youth BUT once you get a kid hooked on crossbow hunting, you are just planting the seeds for a whole new generation of kids growing up, and wanting to add them to the archery season.

if this really needs to happen (and i say, lets keep them out altogether, for as long as possible) put them in the late muzzle season, and lock them away there

There is no such thing as paranoia. Your worst fears can come true at any moment.
Gotta love Hunter S.

I use a crossbow. They are indeed clumsy, noisy and I won't shoot over 20 yards with one.

That being said, a crossbow is not archery equipment and should not be allowed in an archery only season. This is incrementalism at its worst.

The Michigan study showed that allowing crossbows in archery season moved hunters from gun season into archery season.

CrossBow, A Bow an Arrow a Trigger release. Compound Bow, A Bow an Arrow a Trigger release. Vertical Bow-an Ancient weapon. CrosssBow-an Ancient Weapon. CrossBow today-Somewhat Modernized. Vertical Bow Today-Somewhat Modernized,,actually, a lot Modernized. I think hatred will fade :)

I don't care what they do with them as long as they don't make it into the regular bow seasons. There's enough bow hunters the way it is IMO.

Think about how you hold a bow. Think about how you draw a bow. Doesn't matter if the bow is a stick and a string or the fastest compound. You have three points of stabilization. Bow hand, string hand and anchor point. The bow is drawn by the archer, under their own power at the time the quarry is in sight, or perhaps when the quarry is in range.

Think about how you hold a crossbow. Think about how (and when) you cock a crossbow. The crossbow is held like gun, hand on the front stock, hand around the butt stock, butt stock against the shoulder plus you can rest the crossbow on a fence post or shooting rail. You can also rest your elbows on your knees or the ground. The crossbow can be stabilized in any number of ways. The crossbow is, the same as a gun, pre-drawn (loaded) prior to the quarry being in sight or in range.

The only similarities between archery equipment and crossbows are the string and sharp pointy projectile.

I just want to quote this because it is well written and I couldn't agree more.

You would think we were talking about a rifle with a string on it. It still has limited range. Still has drop at different ranges still need to shoot to know those ranges. That is the same as a bow........

Sometimes you just got to delete the long reply you have to a post because it is not worth it. You are either for them or against them.

I am against them in the regular archery season. I think back to all the deer I have messed up on with a bow and think what if I would have had my scoped 12 gauge. I would have had a lot of big deer on the wall. Stupid mistakes happen with a bow that does not happen with a gun at short ranges of 30 yards or less. A crossbow at 30 yards or less really is no different than a gun in my mind and those deer would be dead. Very little movement while aquiring target, crosshair behind shoulder, pull trigger and minimal buck fever.

If the state had a one buck rule, one tag good for all seasons, I could care less if crossbows were allowed during bow season. With a crap deer herd, 2 buck a year rule, a highly efficient weapon at typical bow ranges that takes little to no practice to be good with I do not support them at this time. I also heard they cause EHD, CWD and no rain in SE Iowa. :)

Dont think there are tons of people just out there waiting for them to make crossbows legal before they start hunting. Don't want it during regular bow season either just November 1-24. JK :)

Just wait until your joints and muscles get older. Your disgust might change! I still say, to those who fear all the Big Bucks might be wiped out, a steadier shot, better penetration, shooting from the ground, might mean more deer recovered, thus less deer wounded not found. Less deer shot overall.

Not stirring the pot, but you sure can tell who the bow hunters are. Maybe a crossbow could only be used like the 1st 2 or 3 weeks of bow season since bow season is longer than the ML seasons?

When I get older and my body is not capable of shooting an upright bow, I will move into one of the other seasons which I am capable of participating in.

I suppose they should start allowing golf carts to ride in marathons so more people can join the fun. :D
