Have tried with both actually. Much better weed control with rye IMO.
Deer love rye and wheat both "here". Been mowing last couple of years, so no grain. Makes for easier prep for fall plots.
For those establishing perennial clover in the fall with rye, don't be suprised if you don't "see" any clover in the fall. It's there, just takes until the following spring to take off.
Add another layer at frost seed timing, and stand back!
100# - 125# is about right IMO, more than you'd think.. Even a "wall" of rye leaves a nice shaded clover patch underneath.
Better start with weed control, it's almost cheating.
Can also leave and let it dry down if you want. Just leaves more to deal with later.
Why not use granular AMS Fertilizer? Much more stable than coated urea. Works in well with warm temps.
Agree with others, liquid UAN will have leaf burn.
Ammonium Sulfate AMS (Fertilizer) is a great source of N and S both at 21-0-0-24S (21% nitrogen and 24% sulfur).
Most stable form of N out there. Will not leach into atmosphere, no coating required.
I get mine from a local co-op, they'll put the bagger on and get a smaller amount for me if I...
