    2011 Shotgun Season

I participated in an anterless only park hunt today. Talk about miserable conditions. Good thing I picked up a set of Stearns rain gear years ago. I sat in a tree stand and the Stearns gear kept me dry, the pants got torn up a bit by the briars when I dragged the nice doe I shot out...

    Muzzleloader loads

TC Omega, Bushnell Elite 3200 scope, 260 grain Nosler Partion HG .451 bullet, 80 grains of T7. Every deer I've shot has resulted in complete pass through. Very accurate for me. Down to my last 5 bullets, Nosler has stopped making the Partion HG.

    9 1/2 pointer

Got in the stand at 6:14 this morning and immediately heard something in the timber to the east of me. Looking through the binocs I made out a doe about 40-50 yards out. The slight wind out the south and the fact that I approached my stand from the west allowed me to get in the tree...

    Movement update...

This is a report from Johnson Co. Saw a 4 different bucks with does in the last couple of days, just following them. I don't think the does are in estrus just yet, but the bucks are staying tight with them. Last night saw a group of young bucks moving though the timber, they were alone, they...

Interesting read, Property Rights vs. DNR Deer

The deer vs. property rights is down the page a bit, kind of a long read too. Found it through a Iowa Woodalands link. Note his comment about bow hunting. http://www.kellytreefarm.com/info.html

    Iowa Deer Classic seminar schedule?

Don't know that I would take a big rack to the Classic. Friend of mine took a rack that scored high. He kept the rack on the wall at his business. 3 months after the Classic his business was broken into and the mount was the only thing taken. Thousands of dollars of merchandise available and...

I guess its a house cat???

Shouldn’t it be considered a barn cat, rather than a house cat? If it is a house cat where’s the collar and what have the owners been feeding it so that the house cat would be mistakenly identified as a mountain lion? Where is Newell anyway?

    Just a question

I recall reading an article in F&S a while back that covered the shooting proficiencies of 3-4 gun writers. They shot at targets at different distances with long arms. If memory serves, one “station” was shooting at a moving deer target (simulating a broadside deer). The results being that...

Do it yourself processing - sausage style???'s

Hank Jr. One of the reasons I make my own sausage is to avoid the pools of grease. 50/50 deer/boston butt gives me the Goldilocks of grease content for fresh sausage; not too greasy, not too dry. Talking about brats has hankering to visit Fareway, pound of their brats and a can of Bavarian...

Do it yourself processing - sausage style???'s

I quit making brats a few years ago, not cause they split (used sheep gut) but because they always cooked up too dry not matter what I tried. I also quit stuffing collogen casings a few years ago. I freeze all my fresh sausage in 1 lb packages. It's what the missus wants (and she usually gets...
