Depending on how much cutting you plan to do in a day I would say look at a Milwaukee hatchet. If you're planning on a lot of cutting my Stihl MS 194T has worked great for me.

I agree with the others. Unless he is shooting multiple bucks a year, it probably isn't hurting much. If he's just looking for meat I'm not sure why he doesn't just shoot a doe, but he can do what he wants . . .

I had to fence off my white pines when they were small or the deer would just chew them right off. They didn't seem to bother the spruce as much.

It sounds like I am in the minority, but I would shoot him. You don't get that many chances at deer that big. Unless you have a number of bucks that size on the wall and are really wanting a 200incher and have the ground to protect him you may regret it. Just my opinion, but you did ask.
