That’s good to hear about the predators. I figured the warm weather had something to do with it. Normally it’s cold and snowy and the deer are chowing down on things trying to fill their bellies.
UPDATE
I couldn’t wait so I swapped trail camera cards. The does are still eating, just at night 8:30-9pm and on. I did get some pictures of some coyotes (one even during the day) and a fox.
Not sure if they are affecting me seeing the does or not. Maybe I need to talk to my...
Your right, I think I’ll plant them earlier next year. Last year they were the size of softballs or bigger.
I just went and looked at the plot and there were some deer tracks on the snow in the dirt driveway going into it.
I might try planting clover or rye in the spring as a cover crop and...
That’s some great advice, thanks. I only hunt this during shotgun season, I don’t bow hunt.
Unfortunately this year the plot wasn’t planted until September 1st and sat 3 weeks without any rain and the ground was bone dry to start with.
Tried seeding clover on one side and rye on the other...
It seems like the deer have just stopped eating my foodplot. Many of the tops are chewed off but I have not seen any deer. What gives?
I’m not sure if the cold weather knocked them down and
then the warm weather made them undesirable. I’ve never had this happen.
I’m thinking about planting...
I didn’t see anything last evening but that doesn’t mean that the smoke scared them. During first season a few nights ago I saw 4-6 does and one big buck.
I’ll give it a try again tonight.
I have a dumb question. I have a fire burning in my fire pit, it’s approximately 100’ north of my foodplot. Does the wood smoke scare the deer? I’m going to go sit in my tower blind....we shall see.
I assume it won’t because a lot of people burn wood in the fall/winter to heat their home but...
They have eaten the tops off most of our plot, maybe 1/3acre. Last night I had 3 does and one buck just munching on this stuff. It is our first year planting the big buck mix from them. In previous years we just had them make us a mix of reddish, purple top turnips and rape.
We planted ours...
Just broadcasted it and raked it in with a spring rake....winter rye. We are supposed to get some moisture this weekend. Will it grow this year with it being so late? The soil is nice loose black top soil from my timber.
Well I planted clover on the bare spots on each side of my foodplot. It might be too late but I had the Seed and I did it right before we got rain on Saturday. The foodplot is now really green and 6-8” tall maybe.
I can’t remember how long does it take purple top turnips and radishes to...
I have a field entrance to my foodplot that had a very large pile of topsoil blocking the entrance. Well yesterday I spread the pile and graded it smooth.
What is the difference between winter wheat and winter rye? Is one better to plant then the other? I just need something for erosion...
I had someone plant a foodplot on September 1 but it sat 2-3 weeks before it got any rain. It’s about 1/3 acre of purple top turnips, radish and rape. Last year the whole plot looked awesome but I’m not sure what happened this year.
The middle came in good but there is barley any growth on...
