    Clover

Mow it high. Absolutely the best rye establishment method shown by rob

    Thistles in clover/brassicas

I don't know if this is right but I have 24D'd the crap out thistle and it dies, but more always comes back. SO - just experimented this spring. Had a nasty patch come up in a clover plot (1/5 ac thistles), so I hit that stuff with a HOT mix of Triclopyr and it absolutely stoned it. No clue...

Story time. How did you buy your first farm?

Great idea for a thread! And great story! I'm fortunate to have been raised by great parents who've always drove home the idea of save, save, save. Working and making money growing up and through school, I never spent much on typical kid "stuff" and just slowly accumulated more and more...

    Switchgrass bedding experiment

That will turn out fantastic. I'd encourage you to plant a few cedars or conifers in the strips as well.

    ISO Shingle Oaks

Alpha Nursery in Holland, MI offers bare root shingle oak in the spring. There are a couple Amish outfits that sell 4-5ft tall ones in 3 gal pots for like $10 each as well. Those are in N IN and southern MI. I did buy two large burlaped ones for scrape trees last summer. They were 7ft+ but...

    Genesis 5 no till drill

This isn't directly your question but here's my small drill experience: After years of getting it done hand broadcasting, disking, and rocking my 2 row JD planter, finally got a PH drill this spring. Have already planted clover, rye, switchgrass, milo, and soybeans through it with excellent...

    Lightweight hunting pants suggestions

Not sure if they come in camo, but the First Lite Sawbuck brush pants are so incredibly nice and would make a great early season pant if you're not a camo pattern diva. I have just the tan, green, and slate colored ones for working and now haven't worn jeans in about two years. They're NICE...

    Clover

This^ - Could even include some brassicas in the fall mix. Clover will be so thick and lush the following spring you'll be amazed

Converting invasives to natives, worth the squeeze?

No argument that it kills the heck out of the honeysuckle/MFR. My question/concern is everything else, specifically critters and the open water, that get showered in it. I skimmed, but the article/study doesn't mention wildlife as a parameter, and as an IL resident I am inherently skeptical of...

Converting invasives to natives, worth the squeeze?

That's really impressive how well it worked. Great to see I spray with the best of 'em and again, not looking to argue or take some righteous stance but seems like you might have a bunch of sterile two headed squirrels and deer in the coming years. Just can't be good for those that were out...

    Acorns to Oaks!

    The Oak Whisperer? Very cool!

Favorite thing to plant in newly cleared plots in woods thats 1/2 acre

Depends on the shape and amount of real sunlight getting in. You're going to be fighting tree roots and pH in perpetuity. Oats & certain clovers should be your best bet depending on your geographic location

Honest locust and broadleaves in switchgrass and miscathus

BURN late spring Surely some of the honey locusts will sucker, so that's where I'd spot spray with what the guys said above

    CRP Tree Plantings

I think the income from it is attractive to most, as well as most of us here are deer minded and CRP tree plantings in the midwest can be some of the best cover that exists. What were you getting per acre for the tree planting CRP payment? The CRP tree program has always seemed like a win-win...
