    Switchgrass

Do you burn your switchgrass every other year? Burning seems to really help release the switchgrass and allow it to reach its full potential. Ours still gets plenty tall, as tall as it ever has since we planted it probably 15 years ago. It's just getting a bit weedy. I would burn late May to...

    Switchgrass

Thank you for sharing! And do you use like 2 ounces of oust (a.k.a. SFM 75) per acre? And no other herbicides besides that, correct?

    Switchgrass

We have 4 switchgrass field that are 10 to 15 years old and getting a bit weedy. I'd like to get rid of the weeds using oust, a.k.a. SFM 75. Am I correct that if I spray oust in November that the weeds will not grow the following spring/summer but the switchgrass will not be harmed by the oust...

    Freaky year

I'm not sure if that is a doe or buck but one thing is for sure, that is not a normal buck that is just growing his antlers early. It is either a doe with antlers or a buck that has had his stuff removed. In both of the pictures, the deer is in the perfect positions that you would be able to see...

    Still Holding

So are you seeing or getting pictures of a lot of bucks that have already shed? What percent are you seeing still with antlers on? thanks

    2/16/12 Pull

Good to know, thanks for posting. I'm from SW Wisconsin, so probably similar weather and stress levels on deer here compared to you. I was wondering if you guys think that bucks become more visible after they have shed their antlers? I haven't been able to keep track of them with trail...

    Still Packing

thanks for posting. same here, seeing lots of sparring in the fields in the evening and lots of bucks still have antles on. Never seen so much sparring this late in the year. Other years I've seen it once in awhile this late in the year, but not almost every eveing like I have lately.

    Cereal Grains and cover crops

Here are some pictures showing how much the deer have been digging through the snow to get at our rye. These plots were a mix of 12# red clover, 100# rye, and 7# GHFR. The deer have pretty much clean up all the radishes by now, so the rye is all that's left. I know I didn't get any pictures...

    Cereal Grains and cover crops

Thanks guys! The changes have been very dramatic since we started intense habitat improvements and food plots 15 years ago. Before we started, our 195 acres did not hold many deer because the cover was not as good, and we didn't have food plots, and we are surrounded by professional farmers who...

    Cereal Grains and cover crops

We had 10" of snow over our rye, clover, radish plot and this weekend it was all torn up by deer feeding in it. The only thing left for them to eat in those plots of ours now is the rye because the radish have been devoured by now and the clover is tiny at best (until spring when it explodes...

    Cereal Grains and cover crops

another pic showing healthy soils on the bottom, poor soil on the top 7 Foot tall 3rd year stand of CIR Swithgrass behind this plot! It was burned May 20, 2011, going into it's 3rd growth season. Notice the 7 foot tall 3rd year CIR Switchgrass towering over the top of these deer!

    Cereal Grains and cover crops

Now for some pics of this year's seeding of rye/radish/clover. Planted 100# rye, 7# radish, and 12# of Mammoth red OR 12# of Crimson clover per acre. Did about 30% of the total acreage with the crimson, and the rest got mammoth red for comparison. According to Sagitarius who posts on here, the...

    Cereal Grains and cover crops

I planted several plots with the rye and red clover, and did not mow any of them until July 10th, by which time the rye had all seeded out and turned brown. This was about 100# rye and 12# red clover per acre, and the rye did not crowd it out at all. I never dreamed I could grow such a nice...
