You do not need a concealed weapons permit for hunting in the state of Iowa. In fact, in many counties the permits say "For self defense only" and they do not apply to hunting or long guns. (BTW, this is primarily done to prevent road hunters from aquiring CW permits to avoid loaded gun tickets).
For barrel length I would agree with what pharmer said, I have the 6.5" S&W 629 also, a very nice gun. Ballistically I'd say a .44 is good on whitetails to 100 yards, no problem. Realistically it depends on how far you can hit the target.
