I think doe decoys work better during the rut and post rut than early season. Early season seems the does are around more and bust the setup more. As the rut gets going the does are in hiding I don't see many in the areas I hunt and the bucks are cruising looking for them. If you're see does that aren't being chased at the peak of the rut you have too many does in your area and you need to shoot some.

I think when you start seeing less does on your hunts it's time to break out the doe or buck decoys.
Cow pastures and secluded picked fields are the best places to decoy. Cow pasture is a gamble if the cows are still in it because the cows will get curious and come check out the decoy and tend to hang around for too long.
