Starting a 75 acre tree planting looking for Ideas 2024

Fun project! Love to hear folks adding more diversity to our landscape. Seems like every year more and more trees get torn down to create more ag income. We're slowly turning into treeless Nebraska

I just read this post after I just planted 300 white pine what conifer would you guys plant instead?

Can you cage some of them ? If you buy welded wire and posts, you’d save a bunch. It depends on how many deer you have.

The white pines are a fantastic tree and I've experienced little to no browse on young ones BUT I am in a low deer number part of IL.

Spent the day serviceing and dialing in the tree planters.

20k tree show up next week.

Roughly 25 acres this year. Time for a few buddies to make good on their offer to help.

Drilled in a clover base about a month ago.

Thinking I can get the 25 acres done in 4 to 5 days, maybe a week. Depends on breakdowns.

Found a # of things to fix on this planter as I have not used it before and not terribly familiar with it.

Thanks for all the input from all. Wound up sourcing trees from Iowa, Missouri, Michigan, Wisconsin, and even Virginia.

Bought a 10' walk in cooler from a closing restaurant back during covid for 75$. Got it up and going and ready to recieve some seedlings.

Also plan on tubbing 100 trees per acre so roughly 2500 tubes as well.

This is a cp22 Ripperean Buffer Strip with trees.

The wild plums (in patches) will make a great loafing area for quail/rabbits. Look to have a few of those in areas every 60 acres or so where they can soak up the winter sun also.

Quail spent a lot of time under plum patches after feeding in a telemetry study I did at the Atlanta Conservation area for the MDC.

What a fun project ? You planted last year as well, which trees did the best ?

That was the plan but no. It took a good bit of time to get the all the fields flagged with the fsa as well as I wanted to have a base planted first prior to any tree planting.

As well as most tree nurseries only release conifer trees in the spring and there is a # in my plan.....

This planting is split up over 3 years. 1 in the fall 1 in the spring over the next 3 years. I pushed the 2024 fall planting into the spring of 25 planting.
