Had some roosted last night. Got in there this morning way too early. They wore themselves out gobbling at everything on the limb. As I guessed they gave me exactly one
gobble once they hit the ground. Was never able to catch up with them.
Off to Casey’s to sulk in some breakfast pizza.
Walked a small property and didn’t hear a thing. One last call before I head back to the truck and bam…there he is fired up in a fresh burn. I’m pretty much in the open with a few cedars so there’s not many options. So I sit down in a cedar. Great cover, but I’m expecting him to be at about 60 if I can even get him to come over. No way he’s going to come any closer if he can’t see what he heard in this open country. I crawl up to a big tree in a fence row to cut the distance. I think I can cut just a bit more so I peek around the tree and all I see is a big red head. The trunk is split just enough to fit a shotgun barrel…wait for him to come in to view…and he gets to take a ride in the truck.
Roller coaster of highs and lows today, but glad for it to end on a high. Heard him at exactly noon and he was in the bag a few minutes later. It happens fast.
There’s nothing better than spring turkey hunting.
