Alfalfa mix?

We are planting 4 acres of alfalfa to be bailed for deer and horses. Considering mixing in some timothy grass or clover. Any input / insights / experience on a mix vs pure alfalfa stand?

If you want tonnage for horses - add Timothy. It will do 0 for deer though & take away from the overall nutrition of the plot for deer. Not a big deal though. Timothy is best companion grass to add tonnage for baling IMO. Another way to add tonnage/nutrition/attraction to plot is to drill in winter peas & rye in the fall/ late summer.

Thanks, guys. I am going 25lb alfalfa and 5lb timothy for two of the acres (that we’ll use for my dad’s horses). Thicker stand for thinner stalks and better palatability. The other two acres will be 100% alfalfa. Will include some black oats as a nurse crop. Will see how it comes out. :-)
