Tree planting in a timber

As it relates to a formerly predominantly oak, walnut and hickory timber that was unfortunately high graded pretty badly...

If one wanted to revitalize and improve the timber for future generations, what input can fellow IW's provide?

I intend to whack virtually all ironwoods, a lot of the shagbark hickories and other low value trees starting this winter. I am thinking of also planting some quality species such as various oaks, chestnuts, etc.

Do you cage everything? How much do you prepare the canopy, etc, so there is sufficient sunlight, etc?

Run a fire thru to get rid of leaf cover and then do your hard tsi cut and let lots of sunlight in and let mother nature do her work! Save a bunch of money! My 2cents but others know more than me on this!

I dont know much, but I just planted/tubed/staked 125 seedlings this past weekend. About 35 swamp white oaks were interplanted in about a 2 acre section of the timber. Winter 2024 I cut and treated all the honeysuckle and multiflora in that section. A lot more sun is getting to the floor now after killing off all those invasives. I really should have cut some other trees first before planting, that will be on the to do list this coming winter. From what I have seen on youtube and my forester, you definitely want to handle invasives first.

It was fun, hopefully get some rain soon and hope to see some growth this year. Right now I'm feeling more excited about doing habitat projects, screening, planting etc than I am actually hunting.

Heres a finger where I cut and treated thorny honeylocusts and planted swamp white oak.

It depends on how much sun, but it won’t hurt to try . I’ve seen oak come up nice in a cut area .

We planted 25 swamp white oaks. And 25 Black Walnuts in a predominant Silver maple river bottom.(I tried to be picky about where we planted the black walnuts higher ground) We logged 175-200 silver maples this winter. Also planted about 100+ Red Ossier Dog woods and various dogwood clippings. I tried to plant in heavily logged areas. As to get as much sunlight as possible. We tubed all the trees, and planted the Red ossier in tree tops left And watered them in, even though the ground was fairly moist already. It's the first tree planting we ve ever done. So it's going to be trial and error.

I think Hackberry would do well in a re-plant with some shade . I’m a fan, some landowners do not like to plant hackberry ? I think they mix in nice with oak .

I fight hackberry, wild cherry, black locust and mulberry as invasives all the time, so maybe one of those might be an option. Hackberry and mulberry are my preferred if I had to pick something to leave/plant. Wildlife really like eating mulberries according to my cameras, especially raccoons :(

What wildlife value (or any other value) does hackberry have? I have a ton of young hackberry growing in my timber, way to many IMO. I've been hinge cutting or dropping a bunch of them the last 2 years.
