Dirt nap at 12 steps

I went Friday and had a pretty good hunt and got within 100 yards on two different occasions but a ditch on the first one and a creek with high water on the second had the birds hung up.

I got a call Thursday night from a buddy and he asked if I wanted to hunt with him on Saturday so I took him up on that offer. It had been too long since we had hunted together so it was fun to hang out and spend a morning chasing gobblers. Saturday morning started real quiet with only two birds heard on the roost and neither gobbled more than a couple times. Around 7:00 we decided to head to a corn field that he said they frequently end up at. We got up to the field and heard a gobble not too far away so I tucked into a small cedar and we got the decoys set at 12 steps. Not too long after, a group of 4 jakes came in and hung around for a bit. While they were in the decoys I could hear walking behind me and down the hill. My buddy had a better view and said it was a tom heading towards us. When the tom saw the jakes he made a big circle around and out of the way.

Once the jakes left we gave it a bit of time before calling again and got an answer right away. The second gobble was significantly closer. Game on! A short time later he crested the hill in full strut. He saw the decoys and made his way in and got rolled at 12 steps.
