Looking for disc

I haven’t done corn plots in years but this year I am going to. Going to use dry urea and planter that doesn’t have no-till coulters. Thinking I want something in the 8-10’ range and heavy enough to till the stalks after nocking it over. Located in SE Iowa. Any suggestions what to get?

I have a rhino 8' model and for those tougher fields I have to add weight. (Railroad ties) And go over a couple times on full aggressive than 1 more time with light disc to kill the clods. I know guys who fill the tubing with concrete to add weight.

Found this old sucker pretty close to me, definitely won’t have to worry about it sitting outside! You guys think this would be heavy enough to disc stalks in corn plot after nocking it down for winter? I think it is a Kewanee

Yes, that should be a 2,000 lb disc. Nice thing about hydraulic pull behind discs is you have much better depth control than a 3 point.

Adding a railroad tie on tight or hard soil helps as well, as mentioned above, but you may not need it.

I have a newer model 8ft land pride disc that does not do a good job on corn stalks. Maybe you can find something heavier.

That should do, own one like it.

Thanks all for input. I ended up buying a big heavy Krause disc with wings on it. Took the wings off and should have a lifetime supply of discs and bearings along with spare tires. Crazy that the mid sized farm equipment is better deals than the small food plot sized equipment. Supply and demand I guess….

Yes, definitely. Death of the small family owned 100 - 200 acre farm..

6' Disc cost $3,500. 12' Disc cost $2,500.

6' Drill cost $5,000. 10' Drill cost $2,500.

6' is sweet spot for food plotter market..

We're in the process of trading in our 50 HP Compact Utility for a 75 HP Ag Frame Utility loader tractor for this reason.. Tons more capability as well.

Everybody is adding weight and you are taking it off?

Yeah, small equipment is like buying "buck on bag" seed.

You guys got it figured out!! Older farm equipment! Worst case, Maybe fix some bearings, discs & scrapers (ok, tires & hydraulics but that’s not bad either) & u golden!
I still have my old discs laying around. & yes, I’ll use em on occasion …. Just did a dozing job & needs leveled. Use em on alfalfa seedings too.
One other out of the box response…. U could add no till coulters or row cleaners to that planter for probably less than a disc. Just a thought.
