Opening day of 4th season found me at the "turkey killin' tree" in some big timber that we've named for good reason. It was a beautiful morning with birds hammering but nothing within 300 yards or so. They were fired up but nothing seemed to be getting closer so I was contemplating getting up and heading towards the closest one. I said I was going to give it until 7:00am and then make my decision. Around 6:55 I heard spitting and drumming directly in front of me. There was a good amount of brush between the bird and I so I got into position but was unsure what direction he was going to head. I finally saw his head and he was heading directly at me. At 14 steps I let him have it and the game was over at 6:58am. He never gobbled a single time coming in but hearing one spit and drum before you can see them gets the heart pumping.
On the way out I found a few morels while a gobbler continued to hammer about 200 yards away.
