Changing food to sanctuary

I have an area about 1 acre that I'm looking to turn back into a bedding with food sanctuary.
I planted brassica there this year but want to set it up so I don't have to go in there much and leave it to the deer since it's such a small chunk of land.
Any ideas on what would be the best to plant for year round cover and food in this area?
I was thinking of just clover with miscathus around edges.
Also thought of a forbs and forage blend.
Any ideas?

Upland or lowland area? Soil type?

Bottom land and slop near pond.
Not sure how to get that information?
Definitely not sandy. More clay.
Lots of osage orange,walnut trees and honey suckle growing. Not sure if that tells you anything
