Pedestal Mounts

I've reviewed previous posts regarding pedestal mounts. However, I'm looking to put together one for this years muzzleloader buck (187" my biggest), and my previous biggest muzzleloader buck (171"). I plan on using a whiskey barrel for the base for a corner mount. I'll be ordering the barrel that was being sold at the Deer Classic with the interior shelf and lighting. I will be mounting a worn fence post on top of the barrel with strands of barbed wire still attached.

Now my question is regarding the habitat for on top of the barrel. I've been looking at different grass options to be installed around the fence post (they don't give that stuff away btw). I've heard from several people to look into fall seasonal grasses from stores like Hobby Lobby or Michaels.

Also does anyone have any pointers for creating the dirt base to install the grasses with? I'm assuming you could do so with some top soil and some sort of filler or epoxy to get it molded?

Ive done some bases out of foam insulation sheets cut to size glue together carve/ sand to get look you want spray with spray adhesive and cover with dirt leaves grasses stick into foam easily or you can paint white and spray with adhesive and buy fake snow to cover it with and do a snow scene lots of options

Here is one I did with just heavy base. I prefer it to the other here i did with barwire and a post. The later wants to fall over all the time and isn't as sturdy.

I just went out and dug up clumps of little bluestem. Use an air hose to blow the dirt out of the roots and then used 2 part epoxy to hold the roots back together.
On some others I cut the grass off at ground level. Shot some spray foam in a pop bottle and shoved the clump of grass in the bottle for a mold . After it’s dry trim it to the size you want, wet the foam with Elmer’s glue and dust it with peat moss.

Thanks for the replies. I've got the barrel ordered from Minnick Red Cedar Works and will pick up Friday. I'm going to try using some Styrofoam sheets I picked up from Hobby Lobby. I'll glue them together after installing some metal wire pieces for additional support holding them together. Then I'll do some sanding work and cut to size for the top of the barrel before covering with top soil, leaves and adhesive. I'm still torn on the grasses to use, but I'll have the dirt and fence post covered for now.

I'll post some pictures of the progress along the way.

Here is how we mounted the logo buck for IW.
Pedestal Base has the native grasses but didn't have to worry about making the dirt look good.
Maintenance free for over 20 years

I made this with a wood frame, attached an old fence post, then bagged concrete for weight on the bottom. Fake dirt on top of the concrete, made from peat moss and elmers glue.

I don't know the age of your children or if there will be grandchildren running around at times.. I like the grasses but knew if my grandkids got ahold of them, it would be inconvenient to try and get them repaired. I just used a black mulch glued to the top with vinyl base trim glue. I covered the top with about 1/4 inch of glue then pressed the mulch into the glue with my hands and let dry for 48 hours. I then took a shop vac and sucked up any loose/unglued mulch. I placed a couple pine cones on top to help add something as well. Simple, clean and kind of kid proof.
