Hickory/Pecans

Hardwood11

It is going to be a good fall!
Has anyone planted Hickory trees. I ordered a few with what they call a “Nut bundle” from MDC . I planted a few as an experiment. Not sure if they will grow in runners ?

Just curious….

These were Shagbark I believe.

Generally removing hickory as they are shade tolerant and out compete oaks shutting down regen.

Any tree is cover so thats a positive.

But hickory only provides squirrel food and very little timber value. Usually bought as pallet or mats if big enough
They are kinda cool for us Minnesota guys. We don’t have any up here. I guess a couple shouldn’t hurt ? Let’s see if they survive .

The nut bundle got planted. 5 of each … Pecan, Shellbark hickory, Black Walnut .

I guess we will see how they survive ?

I got hickory everywhere.. whack em all down except for the ones I save for potential stand locations that I’ll probably never end up actually putting a stand in…. Wish I had enough briskets to smoke with all the hickory I got tho! That’d be awesome.

Shellbark & shagbark are good by me in balanced #’s. Not preferred over things like oak but I do like them. Deer eat the nuts - many don’t realize that. Problem everyone sees with hickory- grow 10x thicker than they should be. Thinning is great. Shagbarks great for bats too! BITTERNUT is the 1 of the 3 I’ll cut every time I see em. Worthless IMO. I do wish I had some pecans around.

Good info Skip . I mainly want to see if I can grow any ? It will probably take forever?

Pecans will be an interesting watch as well …
