Thistles in clover/brassicas

We have a half clover half brassica field that we rotate back and forth each year. The brassica portion from last year has a bunch of thistles in it and they are large. What is our best plan of attack at the moment with those? Spray? (And if so, we have gly and 2-4d - what would the recommendation be there?) Mow? Mow then spray shortly after?
 
If they flowered- be nice to cut the flowers off & bag & dump em.
Yes- 2,4-d for sure. High rate & check back if new flush of em later. Repeat if necessary.
When u say “large” are u meaning they are the large thistle- as in musk or bull? Musk or bull have the huge flower and large plant - easier to deal with. Canadian are smaller with smaller flowers- harder to deal with.
Yes, smoke em!!! Gly is fine as well on top of 2,4-d. I can fire off a few more herbicides but really not needed. U probably will need to keep on these for a few years. If the flowering is too late (or even if not) still takes a couple years to settle the seed bank of them & they will peter out after a couple years of frying them. Another option is to run a year of beans or corn. Or do a year of beans - then a year of corn - your thistle problem will be solved. Lot of ways to handle. Just start the process & nuke em & next year- hit em earlier & often until no issue.
If thistles in clover itself ….. I’ve gotten rid of them with very hot rate on butyrac & multiple sprayings … keep on em in clover and they do peter out & vanish. Repeat sprayings is pry to be expected.
 
Thistles are so bad in my area of Minnesota, I think Transline is a good option? But I’d have to look back at what we used ….
 
Thistles in grass…. I think I’ve run about everything known to man now…. 2,4-d is in every mix. If bull or musk i might use triclopyr or duracor. If Canadian…. I usually throw more at it…. 2,4-d, “opensight” (cocktail with 2 things) & either triclopyr or duracor or both if I’m feeling “angry” at those stupid Canadian thistles ;).
Opensight another one to look at adding if u cleaning up grasses. After years of having the hardest fight being Canadian thistles…. I don’t mess around- I hate them!!!

Bout the only time I have trouble with thistle is when the soil gets disturbed .

Have had no trouble knocking it down with just gly?
 
I don't know if this is right but I have 24D'd the crap out thistle and it dies, but more always comes back. SO - just experimented this spring. Had a nasty patch come up in a clover plot (1/5 ac thistles), so I hit that stuff with a HOT mix of Triclopyr and it absolutely stoned it.

No clue if there's any residual or side effects I might run into when I replant that area, but I sure incinerated the thistle!!

Depends what type of thistle & how bad. Gly will kill the “big ones”. Canadians will come back almost everytime. What thistles really need is something else to fill the space. Can’t be wide open dead patches. A corn or bean rotation is also ideal.
Ya- triclopyr has residual. It’s for sure a great tool on thistle. 2,4-d + triclopyr is pretty hard on any thistles too.
 
Is it better to cut the area and then spray with gly since the tops will be open and it will absorb the gly? Clover usually will bounce back or should I use Butyrac after I cut them?
 
Butyrac can be run up to I think 3 QTs per acre. & likely the label will call for oil. It’ll burn back the clover but itll bounce back. Or…. Just hit the areas hard that do have the thistles.

Can you mix Butyrac and Clethodim together with crop oil?

It’s labeled for alfalfa so I don’t need to spend a life sentence in maximum security prison for going off label.
 
I have a few older clover plots that are starting to fizzle out. Fair amount of clover so hate to kill it all off, was hoping to spray it with clethodim and/or clethodim/butyrac combo and then no-till doubletree mix into it. My question is, I have not had great success (ever with multiple attempts) getting clethodim/butyrac to kill, seems like it burns the grass/weeds but they bounce out of it. Can/should I mix a light dose of glyphosate into the mix? If so, how much (1/2 quart/ac, 1 quart/ac)? Want to kill off grass, sedge, along with few other weeds.
