I have only been doing chestnuts for a couple years but maybe I can help with your questions.
To keep critters away, I just mowed about 3-4 feet around each tree. I also have a mulch ring around each tree with the mulch piled about 3" up the side of the tube. So far that has kept the...
I agree with much of what you say but would also add-most people over simplify this debate. The type of weapon used and how the DNR manages that weapon is definitely a factor but without a base of environment/climate/terrain/genetics you will not replicate Iowa. The same reason why antelope...
There it is! Gun season or not, if you don't have the right environment/habitat/terrain/genetics it would be extremely difficult to replicate what Iowa has.
This one was started as a seed in spring of 2019.
Had about 10% die off the 1st year. Is that about normal.????
I know it was mostly my fault with incorrect planting methods.
pretty sure roundup can be applied at 2/3 oz per 1000 sq ft or 32 ounces per acre(double check label). I have used low rate effectively to kill grass in clover without killing the clover. May temporarily curl the leaves a bit but clover is tough.
I like clethodim also but I use it only when...
Placed these in the pots about 3-4 weeks ago. They are growing but the cooler temps and all the rain seemed to slow them down some. Hoping to get them in the ground later this year.
Question- How do you guys over winter them so they can be planted in the spring when they are still dormant...
That looks AWESOME!
I started with a few this year and it has been a lot of fun so far. Got about 95% germination rate. Hoping to get some in the ground later this year.
I got my chestnut seeds out of the fridge this week and placed them in some treepots I got from Stuewe and Sons. Roots are about 2-3 inches long
My question is- Should I place them in full sun or part sun? Or should I use a mesh shade net?
Thanks
Best time- Early September
However, you can do it any other time when ground temps are around 60. You will just have more weeds to contend with if you do it in the spring and you will have more watering to do if you do it in the summer.
