    Shoulder blade penetration

I had a single lung hit 4-5 years ago, but that was a complete pass through with no liver involvement. I waited 4 hours to begin tracking (we waited 7.5 hours for this one) and kicked him out of his bed 100 yards away. Checked the bed and there was blood, so I waited 1/2 hour and began...

    Shoulder blade penetration

Luckily the guy hunting on the other side of the fence is a really nice guy from Louisanna that we ran into the evening of the search. He is keeping an eye out for us. I'm a veterinarian so I guess I have probably over-analysed the shot placement and evidence found. I think I got very little...

    Shoulder blade penetration

Shot a buck on Thursday morning at about 18 yards quartering slightly to me. 350 grain arrow tipped with a Grim Reaper 1 3/8" expandable hit what I think was the back half of the shoulder blade. The front 6" (at best) broke off inside the buck as he ran off (no limp, and did jump a 4' fence)...

    Question on shot

One thing that most people probably don't realize is that the liver is located on the right side of the abdominal cavity (between the body wall and the midline of the abdomen). The large rumen (holding tank of 4-part stomach) is why. So dependiing on which side the deer is hit and the angle...

    Central Iowa Hunter Killed

One out of 3 hunters will fall at some point in their hunting career. I started using a Prussic knot for safety when climbing and getting into and out of my stands. Get some good braided climbing rope at Menards, Lowes, etc (looks like mountain climbing rope). I tie it around my tree at the...

    Lost one

If there was "bright pink" blood on the arrow my guess would still be a lung hit. I have operated on hundreds of cows and muscle blood is just a plain red color, nothing pink about it. A muscle hit would coat the entire arrow, or at least have tallow on the other 1/2 of the arrow if it passed...

    Lost one

Here is a posibility: with the angle of the doe and the angle of the arrow comming from your tree stand I think you may have only hit the top of the off-side lung. If the arrow went through the very top of the inside of the chest cavity this would give you the blood on only one side of the arrow...

    Lethal Shot Question

The descending aorta runs from the heart towards the rear of the deer just under the backbone in the abdominal cavity. If you cut that, the deer will die just as quick or quicker than a double lung. I have had to euthanise cows that way when a surgery hasn't gone quit as planned. There is...

    Using ground blinds

I have a pop-up blind similar to a double bull in design(ameristep brickhouse) and was wondering if you think the "black hole" effect of only opening a few windows frightens of alerts deer if they aren't used to seeing the blind? Do deer need time to acclimate to the blind, unlike turkeys...
