The orange army will be hitting the timbers. Expect company unless you can get way-way-way back.

    Neighbor Thinks I'm crazy

So just over a year ago, I bought 120 acre farm. It's a mostly tillable tract, but has a deer hunting wildlife element to the farm. The Wildlife element to the farm consists of some CRP, and A river bottom that looks like park city.(Hollow) So after visiting with a fella that works on Timber...

    2022 Rut vs Previous years??

Corn, Corn, Corn, Corn. By my 2 best farms, there is 240 acres standing by each one. Later planting dates, equals a later harvest. Now snow on the corn making it later. (I bet there's 50+ deer in each, I hope they leave it stand though shotgun season, at this point) (Our harvest was later as...

    Views from the stand 2022-23

Sat Last night, and tonight.(For my first 2 sits of the year) No real Rut action for Nov 4th and 5th. Seen 2 bucks tonight. Both just feeding. Have a 240 acre field bordering my farm. That might be hiding the rut activity. Hunting won't get good until corn comes out.

    Jared Mills leaving Midwest Whitetail

I agree with a lot of comments above. If I had to hunt for an occupation, I think it would take all of the fun out of it. Pretty soon you resent it. I hunt to get away from the world. Not be video taped, and broadcast to the whole country. (I wouldn't be to excited about having a cammera man in...

    Passing bucks and success rate

I just enjoy the hunt. Getting to shoot a good buck would just be a bonus. Last year I killed a 10 pointer right under 160. I've got 3 on the wall so far.(Which is mostly just keeping the memory of the hunt alive)(I can look at the mount and remember the hunt well) So if I'm going to shoot one...

What do you think this is?!

Jeepers, Seems like there's an awful lot of pictures of Mountain Lions in Southern Iowa. Think I'd be strapping an AR15 along to the bow stand, if I bow hunted in Southern Iowa. Running into that in the dark would not be for me.

Crazy Grizzly attack on Black bear den.

That shriek, makes my hair stand up on end. Pretty brutal ending for the cub. But Nature is unforgiving.

    Biggest “6” I’ve ever seen ….

If I had that deer on cammera, I'd dedicate my season to that buck. Cool, unique, and a huge frame. Score is over rated.

    Plans for opening weekend?

Don't plan to hunt. I use to hunt hard all October long when I had free time after school.(Burning out my tree stands) Since I've gotten older, and busier with the farm. I m more selective about my sits, Where, When, How, etc etc. Hunting Smarter not Harder. Have shot bigger bucks since I've...

    450 Bushmaster Bullets

Shooting Hornady STS s ammunition out of a Burris scoped 450 bushmaster. Have shot probably 6 deer with the gun and it's like shooting a sledge hammer. I rarely have an exit would, Because I always shoot through the shoulder. And they don't go more than 30 yards.

    Land prices / insane!!!

Good quality farmland 85CSR+ doesn't come up for sale a lot here. The good stuff is in pretty strong hands.(and they won't sell, their lifers) The rec ground here gets sold to people from the city. For 4-5k/acre. I'm not in one of the primo NE Iowa counties, But still have some pretty good deer...

    How many trail cams?

Normally 1 per farm in the best spot. A lot of my spots the deer funnel in as the season goes on. So summer cammeras do not really mean much. I would say November 1st to the late season is the best time for me to run cammeras.

If you could pick the Day, Weather, Ground condition, and Wind direction to Bow hunt what day would it be??

Personally I prefer November 7th a 12 mph South-SouthWest wind 50 degrees, a drizzly day with a front approaching. As I have a make or break tree stand, that it takes these conditions to access it. But its on the edge of the best bedding area I have. If I can make it there, in the dark under...

    200 inchers?

I read this whole thread, Southern Iowa This, Southern Iowa that. 200 inch this, 200 inch that. I agree. Ya ll should stay in Southern Iowa. There's no big bucks in North Iowa. 200 inches is cool. All I care about is a big framed Mature buck. If you have to debate weither he s big or not. He s...

    Land prices / insane!!!

I think land has softened a little recently. A good recreational piece thats secluded. And has a good history is still going to bring good money. Several Low to Mid 70s CSRs unimproved(untiled) tillable tracts are still bringing right at 10k. Which I would say is down some. And then you have...

How much to buy back beans…..

I was in the same situation last summer/fall. I bought a farm, that Is a mix of tillable and timber/cover. I approached the current farmer about buying 1.5 acres of standing beans. We did, Yield on the farm which was 55× price he sold them for. Which at the time was 12.50 dollars. Times 1.5...

    First Decent Velvet buck

Not a giant but a good buck. I believe I had 1 or 2 encounters with this buck last year. He should really have another year before making the hit list. 1 note about running cammeras so far this summer. There is a tremendous amount of 2 year old bucks, and a lot of future potential.
