    Drones and future management…..

Really excited to have my farm (and my neighbors on two sides) flown this week. Chatting w the guy that is coming out to do it tonight for quite awhile and what a fascinating job he has. I think I’m more excited to talk to him about his insight on the state of the deer herd in the Midwest then I...

Much respect for Winke. Have learned a lot watching him over the years and he seems like a solid dude. But I sure don’t agree w him on his philosophy on does/deer density. His old farm had a ton of deer and he was killing Mega giants. EHD hit that farm, far less deer, and he had nowhere near the...

    Congratulations

Sounds like a fun hunt! What was your food source they were coming in to? Beans?

    Apple/Pear Trees

Thoughts on the black plastic piping I put around the base of my trees? We thought we might be adding a layer of protection from the rabbits w them on at least during the winter but maybe they’re not a good thing for the tree come spring/summer? Noticed u didn’t have them on yours. How about...

    Apple/Pear Trees

Good info, thank you. Can they be spaced too far apart within reason? If a guy went 20’ or even 25’ apart to be safe is there a downside?

    Apple/Pear Trees

Amish built in northern Michigan. Mostly cedar. We like them. Time will tell but for $700 they’re hard to beat. Can’t hardly buy the lumber much less the time to build one for that. The windows from this particular seller we bought it from are too narrow for bowhunters though, so we are going...

    Apple/Pear Trees

Haven’t ever had crabapple before. Do the deer eat the small berries on this type of species? I’m told they are a great pollinator so that was main reason I planted them but I’m interested to see how the deer prefer them or not.

    Apple/Pear Trees

Hope so. Guess time will tell when I see how many make it. Hoping that over the next 90 days of dormancy that the air pockets in the holes/soil will settle with the rain & snow over that time.

    Apple/Pear Trees

Well, we got a ton done the last two days before the really cold air hit. Headed back home now to beat the snow coming towards w central IL. Got 17 trees put in the ground (skid steer w auger). 7 Bartlett pear, 4 Arkansas black apples, 3 red fugi apples, and 3 red jewel crabapple. Staked and...

    Apple/Pear Trees

Yea Thursday is high of 34 and Friday is 22 so with the skid steer and auger I’m hopeful we can get most of them in the ground and caged on Thursday but maybe that’s wishful thinking. It’s been really warm for the last couple weeks. Just one of the many disadvantages to being 5 hours away from...

Looks great! Approx how many feet of fence does each tree have for the cage do you know? Looks like around 5’ diameter cage?

    Apple/Pear Trees

Trying to post a pic of the bigger trees the guy has and it’s saying the file is too large. Probably 10 years ago now I had Don Higgins out to my farm to plant some pines and apple trees. He said provided u don’t have a bunch of frost that now is the best time to plant them while they are dormant. ‍

    Apple/Pear Trees

The small ones (5’ anpprox) are in pots yes. I am also going to a big nursery Thursday morning and the owner there has crababpple and apple trees that he says are 36” root ball/older bigger trees that I’m going to barter from him. But again, don’t have much/any knowledge of what I’m doing...

    Apple/Pear Trees

Rookie fruit tree planter here so go easy on me haha…. Headed down to the farm this weekend (west central IL) and among other projects was planning to put around 10 fruit trees in the ground. Have skid steer and auger. Most of the trees are small diameter potted trees, maybe 5-6’ tall. Planning...

    Deer #’s down statewide???

Hard to square increased efficiency with a significant reduction in overall harvest though. I can see what you are saying when it comes to the biggest/oldest bucks but when it comes to the overall herd it doesn’t make sense that the harvest is down and not steady or up with the increased...
