    Ticks

Fear? No fear. Ticks and Chiggers a dern nuisance. Ticks however are to be feared. Lime disease dont ya know. I know. I use the P spray. I have the tick resistant clothes. I still like to get my fruit tree pruning and locus sprout and brush cutting done in the fields before they come...

    Early Spring?

I know what you’re saying. There goes the loneranger with his negativity again. But it is true. Has happened to my fruit at least 3 times in the past 10 years. Warm too soon. Then a freeze. No fruit.

    Early Spring?

Everyone gets all excited about warm temps. Last March was cold. A cold March is good if you have fruit trees. Keep em asleep as long as you can. Warm March forces them to wake up. Buds open. Then it is inevitable another cold shot will sneak in. Usually around the first of April an get down...

Better hurry and get that money before CWD ends the Cash Cow. Or in this case Cash Deer.

What is an average buck in Southern IA

Not complainin. Just observing the way things are. As before stated. When I first arrived in Iowa and decided to hunt I assumed deer hunting would be about the same anywhere. Especially within just a few miles. Same timber and crops bout everywhere. It isn’t. Varies widely. I believe I have...

    2020 setting a realistic goal

You all know what I think. As has been stated already. Age is more important to me than bone. As Sligh pointed out. As Daver said. Even age depends alot on your neighbors. Let em live neighbors means more bucks 3 yrs and up. I saw quite a few doe this season. Maybe next season if I don’t...

What is an average buck in Southern IA

Thanks. I am happy with the hunting. Not bad on my small 40 acres with just 3 stands. I like a challenge. I once thought coming to Iowa that deer hunting would be about equal wherever you were. Timber, crops, about everywhere. Wrong. It varies much from place to place. Same in any State.

What is an average buck in Southern IA

Yep drought last 3 Summers. Nice bucks? To me mine are nice. 3. 4. Occasional 5 yr old. Is enough for me. Just saying usually takes the whole month of November. And just saying should be more 2 yr olds surviving. Should be more 3 yr olds surviving. Many obviously taken out. Just saying...

What is an average buck in Southern IA

Few does I meant. I have seen better doe numbers around this season. Possibly next season I will pass on any buck. Under 4 yrs. I did this season. And if I have to take 2 does. Hard to do though when you figure. Taking 2 doe is really taking possibly 4 to 6 deer.

What is an average buck in Southern IA

Just the way it is here. Large variation from area to area and from talking to other deer hunters not that far away I have concluded that acreage size and neighbors are a factor on how old deer get. Again my observations are not just with 3 year old bucks and older. I see many yearlins. A few...

What is an average buck in Southern IA

All areas of SE Iowa are not equal. Just sayin. Is plenty good for me however. Even if its not over run with 5 and 6 yr old bucks

What is an average buck in Southern IA

Don’t think my comment was incoherent at all. I have had many seasons when I saw many yearlings and 2 yr old bucks. I wondered every next season,” where are all those Former 2 yr old bucks? Hardly a 3 after 80 hrs of sitting. Obviously must be taken out before they reached 3. I basically...

What is an average buck in Southern IA

Hey all you boners. You know my experience in SE Iowa. If he makes it to 4 yrs Old in my neck of the woods,, he's a “keeper “ ! Last season along with others it took me 65 hrs through November to get a shot at a broken 3 yr old. Neighbors are definitely the key. Also if you have enough...

    No booner but

Now most of the guys and gals on this site I suspect would pass on this buck. He is no Booner Bone but he is 4 yrs old. I knew that when I saw his body and had it confirmed by tooth examination from my deer biologist friend. What made this hunt even more special was that I didn’t have to spend...

Iowa Two Cases of Chronic Wasting Disease Found at Deer Farms

Its a win for the Ag business and the farm bureau if you think about it. Deer farms incubate deer killing disease that spreads to the wild herd. Another way to eliminate the deer problem as they see it.
