    hunting video

yes Iowachip ... I also would buy the Iowa videos if they where good quality ... Liv4rut ... I agree with you that what is happening stinks but the way I see it we have two options. We can do nothing and continue on the path we are on which will lead to the future you discribed, or we can try...

    hunting video

I agree that Iowa has lost it's secret of being a great deer hunting state. I hate it too, but I also realize there is absolutely nothing any of us can do about that. The only thing we can do about it, that will make a positive impact for Iowa's deer hunting future, is to use all the publicity...

    To P or not to P ...

Hey LIV4RUT ... that "skydumping" thing sounds like a great way to boobytrap your stand. Better watch out Bighole!

    To P or not to P ...

When you're in the bow stand and you've got to go, what do you do? Just curious about opinions on how bowhunters resolve this issue, and if it really matters.

    Mathews MQ1 or Outback

I like Gundog's advice. You can have an old recurve I've got and save your money for our food plots.

    Native plantings

You can get native grass seed through the USFWS Partners program if they approve of your project. We got enough seed from them to plant 36 acres with a high quality tall grass prairie mix ... best of all it was free.

    Central Iowa QDMA Inaugural Meeting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for posting the time and the place so people can attend. Unfortunately I can't make it that night but I appreciate the meeting info. If you could ask some questions to the QDMA rep. at the meeting and post the answers here, it might shed some light on the QDMA. I am a QDMA member, and...

Thoughts on QDM (Quality Deer Management) in Iowa?????????????

Wouldn't it be great if just the first day of shotgun season 1 was doe only and then anysex would start the second day. Just imagine what this would do for our buck population if they just had one day to get a little more educated. I would like more but I think this would be an option that...

    cougar

The first thing I would like to know is how big a farm does your landowner have. If he says he has a cougar on "his land" and they have a range of 50 miles, he must have a pretty big farm ... for Iowa. Mountain lions rarely use dens unless they have very young kittens. They usually abandon...

Thoughts on QDM (Quality Deer Management) in Iowa?????????????

I think as more people start to practice QDM in Iowa the average size of our deer will improve. QDM will work in Iowa but it will be difficult in some locations. If you are a small landowner with less than 100 acres, and no one else around you is a QDM'er, it will be tough to see results...

    Nice Buck - No Velvet

Re: Computer Moron Thanks for the camera VMAN ... it takes great photos. I'd bet we'll be calling you again for our second camera. I also put the pic on the QDMA website under antler watch. It came out a little larger on that website if you guys want a closer look.

    are mountain lions legal targets?

lions and tigers and bears ... oh my ... it's amazing what a growing bobcat population and a few young male transient lion kills can do to the average Iowan's imagination. Like CRITRGTR points out, it's amazing our all male lion population survives the web of trail cams out there and the two...

    Ladder Stand Affect?

I think deer notice them and if you are a bow hunter they reduce your chances. In your case I would try to camo the ladder with cedar limbs or brush so the steps aren't so obvious or try several well placed ground blinds you can use in different wind conditions.

    Shooting 'inferior' deer

I'm not saying anyone should shoot bucks with obvious poor genetics but as a landowner in Iowa you can get three any-sex tags. Two paid and one free landowners. If you have bucks that are obvious culls, I don't think it's a good excuse to say I don't have enough any-sex tags to "waste".

Shooting 1.5 year old Spike Bucks

The article in Quality Whitetails indicated that, "on average", spike buck yealings produce smaller racks than forked horn yearlings when they are older bucks. The article also pointed out that a few individual deer that were spike yearlings ended up growing into really nice bucks that would...

Shooting 1.5 year old Spike Bucks

There is an article in the latest issue of Quality Whitetails about harvesting 1.5 year old spike bucks. What I got from reading the article is that yearling spike bucks are usually but not always inferior and should not be culled from a deer herd unless someone is practicing QDM on a very...

To mow or not to mow

If you are fall planting, with your mix I assume you are, mow it - a couple times if it is tall to chop up the grass residue, then spray it with roundup after it grows back to 6-8 inches tall. If you are spring planting, mow some firebreaks this fall and burn it next March. When it greens up...

No, you're not all wet. I've noticed it too ... I think it's called ground swellage.

    Digital Trail Cameras?

I'd like to buy a digital trail camera. What are some opinions as to which one is the best and maybe which ones to stay away from.

    Iowa QDM acres?

Just curious as to what size farms people are trying to practice QDM on in Iowa. I've got 200 acres and wish it was 2000, but I'm interested in hearing what other QDM'ers have.
