    High grading bucks

I think a lot of this is perceived rather than reality with Skips scenario, here’s why…. You cull out what is determined to be inferior genetics. At that point what is left, the bucks that are living having the ability to grow bigger racks because they have better genetics to start with so as...

    Another switchgrass question

I would say no if you are looking for feed value and tonnage. Natives grow very little until temps increase late June through August. I have saw some decent growth with a July 15th mow for hay in Missouri which is the earliest you can cut CRP. I’d guess a July 1st ish cut would maximize feed...

    High grading bucks

Great deer and true story but it would be interesting to see how the teeth come back on that deer as the triggers I look for say he is 100% 1 year older in each picture than you are thinking, just my opinion. If truly only 4, he needs to walk. . Nice deer. The concept on cementum annuli is...

    High grading bucks

Granted I have been fortunate to shoot more than my fair share of really nice deer and I am sure it has helped me chill A BUNCH in this conversation but one thing I bring myself back to now is deer are a renewable resource and if someone shoots a nice up and comer and they are both happy and...

    Disappointing Iowa Gun opener

Yikes, I always wondered why my deer scored less but looked bigger! :)

    Supplemental feeding potential?

I have a couple arguments here. Tell me that with the pressure to PRODUCE good content the aforementioned hunting personalities don’t hunt a little closer to the feed if the camera shows him there. We know Lakoskys have their cam at the feeder. Tell me Bowmar doesn’t hunt over feed, he did...

    Gene pool

This is what I was referring to on hunters and hunting having a larger impact. I have heard that places in Illinois where the outfitters are prevalent that genetics have degraded and 8 point deer are more prevalent because the deer with higher scoring antler genetics have been...

    Gene pool

I would worry less about EHD affecting gene pool than hunters and hunting affecting it! I would HIGHLY doubt that there is a correlation between EHD and antler growth from a genetic standpoint. Age structure, stress level and animal health will impact antler growth more. I would ASSUME that...

    2023 Deer Harvest Report numbers

I think it closed already from what I heard. Maybe reopened but original owner sold and paid back the covid money to subsidize meat locker updates and construction.

    Broadhead discussion

I am 100% on same page as Iowa BowHunter1983, started out YEARS ago and not knowing much about tuning my arrows and broadheads, ended up going to a NAP spitfire expandable which did improve down range arrow flight BUT… I shot my first P&Y buck at five yards off the ground and no pass through...

    Crossbow question….

An interesting research project would be to see what happened to license sales. IMO there was probably (very likely) a spike in archery permit sales the first few years after crossbows were allowed. From what I see of people is that it is cool when it is new and then interest dwindles off. Gun...

    Rut Action/Movement Reports

Evidently a quiet day in the woods with no updates here. Several bucks cruising including 3,4+ yo. Several does and fawns still together.

    Human Urine

Anytime I feel like going I go from the tree! I’ve literally pee’d in front of a mature doe under my tree and never had an issue.

    Rut Action/Movement Reports

35 days after I released my arrow, I finally found my buck.

Great deer and great story. Not knocking what he carried this year but those sheds look crazy good. But was he going backwards rack wise or poor growing year? Congrats and good for you putting in the time to recover him.

    Rut Action/Movement Reports

Well I don’t see this thread again for this topic so just as well start it. Post up what you all are seeing for rut activity. Covered 120 miles of interstate today for work meeting and several dead deer especially bucks from the past few days so they are moving. Had pretty good hunts since...

HOW LONG LIVE? Stomach & maybe liver- PIC!!!

What I notice… Given leg is back it appears like a decent shot until you look at rib line, it is back AND LOW. What we see in pic is entry hole so exit is lower yet as it appears the shooter is in a tree. Lungs could be at that line but only on top third of body as diaphragm angles up and back...

    Weekend strategy?

I am working on a CRP SAFE project right now to see if I can increase the numbers. At least there is a covey of quail in the hedgerow to start with. See a rooster pheasant or two every spring within a mile so maybe there is hope.
