    New switchgrass

How important is getting the seed packed done after broadcasting? This past weekend I broadcasted about a 1/2 acres worth, about 5-10 yard wide screens. About half of it was in an area I can't get anything to it to try and pack down, it was walked on to try and pack it I had a couple of helpers...

Story time. How did you buy your first farm?

Closed on my first farm, an 80, at the end of 2021 at 32 years old. I knew I wanted to buy land when I was in college. I still remember sitting in the computer labs at ISU looking at whitetailpropeties.com all the time and dreaming. It was my #1 goal in life, to own my own farm. Whenever I...

    Clover

Yesterday, 5/18, I broadcasted some clover seed. I know its late, but wanted to give it a try. Couple weeks ago I sprayed the areas with gly and 24d. Yesterday came back and burned them off and then raked them out a bit. Broadcasted clover. I know its late, but really wanted to try and get...

    Mulching Seedlings

My first tree planting this spring is doing really well. Yesterday after turkey hunting I checked on most of my seedlings. 75 swamp white oak, 25 plum, and 25 white pine. Nearly everything is doing well, just one plum not leafed out and although I didnt check every oak I'd bet 95% + are leafing...

    Tree Tube Options

No worries, appreciate the offer. I got them all planted and tubed a few weeks ago. I borrowed a dibble from a fellow Iowawhitetailer, worked great. I checked most of my plantings just yesterday after turkey hunting, 90% + are doing well and leafing out!

Anyone know what plant this is?

Coralberry/buckbrush. Lots of it on my farm. Forester said to leave it. Native and is a good foodsource/cover for wildlife. I have seen deer browse on it many times. Good cover, its about waist high when full grown.

    3rd Season Tom

I was fortunate enough to fill my 3rd season tag Sunday morning. I had gone out Saturday morning on a different farm that I've fill a tag the past two seasons. It was good morning of hearing a few gobbles, seeing a dozen or so deer, and watching a coyote chase deer around in timber. I did have...

    New respect for turkeys

I'd say turkey hunting is more enjoyable to me. The weather is more comfortable, dont have to worry about the wind/your scent, they handle hunting pressure better, you can come & go a lot easier. Throw up a blind to bowhunt out of in the middle of a field and they dont care. Hearing gobbles in...

    Tree planting in a timber

I dont know much, but I just planted/tubed/staked 125 seedlings this past weekend. About 35 swamp white oaks were interplanted in about a 2 acre section of the timber. Winter 2024 I cut and treated all the honeysuckle and multiflora in that section. A lot more sun is getting to the floor now...

    Question on Turkey numbers….

My farm has a really good population fall and into winter. Come March it seems they largely transition elsewhere. I'd love to trap if I was closer, daily trap checks are not feasible for me. Overall though driving around the hotspots where I could count on seeing large flocks of birds has...

Things that make me go Hmmmmm....Land Prices

It might drop rec land prices some. My down payment was largely money I had invested in an individual brokerage account. For some that may have been socking money away into an account to use as a down payment on a farm and were getting close to maybe buying something this spring or this year...
