Convert Sloped Cattle Pasture to Habitat

What’s in the seed bank is never what I want. I’m new at this and I have at least one small piece that I want to put into CIR switch next year. I’ve tilled a fire break around it and plan to burn. I’ll use chemicals if be needed too so long as it’s dirt by winter so I can frost seed. That’s my plan.

    Clover

That same scenario has me thinking a lot about converting to grazing alfalfa instead. Maybe grow the clover where there is at least some shade.

Youth hunting? Tactics, what to shoot & anyone going?

I let my daughter decide. I emphasize that it’s her choice. I do recommend that we focus on harvesting mature animals (either sex). I’d be thrilled if she shot a giant. There is a “very curious” lack of 5+ year old deer in my area every year so if we see one, it’s not going to get a pass. This...

Describe your best stand spot !

A farm I bow hunted for many years before it sold. The yellow line is a trail on top of a steep bluff. The top of that bluff is very narrow and drops off precipitously to the north down into a creek. On a south wind, in the rut, bucks will cruise it looking/scent checking the field to the south...

Describe your best stand spot !

Big white oak at the corner of one of our ponds. NW wind puts scent out over the water. My best archery buck was traveling N on the dam, didn’t work out for him. Great spot every year if November is cold.

    November date thoughts??

All other things being equal, in SE Iowa, I would not miss Nov 9-12. After that, it gets slow, fast. If I could only bowhunt one day, it would be Nov 10, no question.

    Permethrin

I bought a spray bottle off of Amazon. I spray my Muck boots every now and then. I honestly can’t remember the last time I found a tick and I’m outdoors on the farm a lot.

    WHICH DO U SHOOT?

Most likely, neither. But, if I had a crack at the top one on the very last day of any season, I’d punch the tag.

    Stands

Hope to finally get some alfalfa in this weekend. Youth is fast approaching and I currently only have one stand up so I’m way behind. I’d like to have my stands up and stay out for at least 3 weeks prior to use.

    Opinion Friday night- score?

Nice buck, good luck and if you don’t get him this year, he’s going to be super next year!

    Oak Wilt

I thought you had to isolate and kill to get in front of it or it will continue to spread until it kills them all where the roots are in contact.

    Establishing fire breaks

I have zero experience burning but I burnt 1/3 acre Saturday to create a new alfalfa plot this fall (cross my fingers). I used my 6’ rototiller to surround the area I wanted to burn and it worked perfect. I seriously fear losing control of a fire.

    Turkey Broods

Our local turkey population has been decimated and coon and coyote populations are off the charts, it would difficult to imagine these trends are unrelated. Going to see what I can do about that…

    Alfalfa

Can anyone recommend where to buy? I’m thinking about trying some RR seed this fall.

What are your thoughts on a new CVA Optima V2 Muzzleloader?

Probably can’t go wrong with either, maybe go look at the line up, handle them and then decide. I’d personally pay a little more for better fit/feel, finish or trigger but it wouldn’t be necessary. Any should be more than accurate enough.
