My son shot his youth season turkey (2 years in a row) this morning at 6:15. Had a pair of gobblers take about 10 minutes to reach us after flydown. We had a bobcat ruin a hunt last weekend, but today it was like they read the script! 24 lbs., 10.5" beard, and 3/4" spurs.

I started this last fall doing the same thing you are looking into. A friend and I bought about 2 dozen DP traps (cheap cat food/ mackeral for bait) and rotated them between 3 properties. Our main goal was to have fun and get our kids involved. My second goal was to help our turkeys out a bit...

I had to go the same route Tommy mentioned. Got a good deal on a adult 20 ga 870 and put on youth stocks. Still is too long for my son and will probably borrow my friends Mossberg 500 for one more turkey season. Fits him better than the 870.

Made my first pair by following the steps in an article from a hunting magazine. A few years later I started making a few more getting more detail finishes and wraps. Lots of trial and error.

Almost a year later, I put together a set of wingbone calls for my son's Bday using his 1st turkey's wings (one for him and one for me.) He chose the color and we both ended up liking the combo.

Sent this call to Teeroy a few days ago. It will be at the IBA Banquet for the silent auction (I think). It is wrapped in tan and trimmed with olive and black. Sounds purdy too!

Just looking to hunt something other than Easterns. Do it yourself/ knock on doors/ public land hunting. Would like to try a couple trips out before taking my son on a hunt in a few years.
