The #1 Battle & issue we fight for in Iowa….

Couldn’t agree more, 1/1 buck to doe ratio being preached doesn’t work very well with EHD outbreaks.

    Question on Turkey numbers….

I would Find someone with a thermal and take them through your ground over the next few weeks until you can’t find a coon anymore, and then don’t be surprised when you shoot just as many coons again next year. Burn brush piles when you can safely do it, and get a few coon cuffs. Come fall set a...

    Double cropping Brassicas

I don’t know what insects and diseases target brassicas but I would be skeptical if you were to do that year after year. We had leftover cover crop seed we scattered by our shop a couple years in a row and the radishes that were seeded in the spring all flowered and put seed on. You would want...

Late gun season vs Early Gun seasons +/-‘s

That’s definitely a possibility, I think the statistic that just sticks in my craw though is the number of gun and muzzleloader tags that go unfilled being around 85,000. Giving those same guys another gun season and 2 muzzleloader seasons to fill that tag. When you consider that the buck...

Late gun season vs Early Gun seasons +/-‘s

I’d support that for bow + 1 other season…. But anything more than that is going to have a negative impact. Youth tags have been floating yes but that’s like 6,000 hunters not 100,000. The whole point of having 2 gun seasons is to split hunters up so they aren’t all on top of each other. Also I...

Late gun season vs Early Gun seasons +/-‘s

I would definitely miss my scope or my paramount but if one or both have to go to make our hunting better I would rather have bigger deer to hunt. I think some low hanging fruit would be smokeless powder , that would cure the assault rifles during late muzzleloader too.

Late gun season vs Early Gun seasons +/-‘s

Spot on , only thing I would add is the one tag you got would float between archery and ONE other season. Allowing guys to go gun+ bow+ muzzleloader with a statewide tag would increase the number of bucks shot. There were 85,000 unfilled gun and muzzleloader any sex tags in 2023 compared to...

Late gun season vs Early Gun seasons +/-‘s

I really do think we have the perfect season structure here, we have obviously killed too many does and I feel like most of the issues we have probably stem from the lack of deer because of that. But I wonder if we’ve maybe crossed a line as far as the weapons and technology that we’re allowed...

Need ideas to fix this EHD pond

If you can get it dry enough to disk and run a sheepsfoot it will help it hold water better too. I did that on one of ours.

    Beans and…..

My interpretation of what LaPratt was talking about by mixing the two was so that a deer can’t see across the entire plot and so theyd feel more less exposed , which would encourage bucks to enter the plot earlier. Maybe this could be accomplished with some Egyptian wheat In strips with a drill...

    Beans and…..

From what I’ve seen deer would rather eat the corn if it’s mowed , if they’re mixed together in a blend you can forget about that. Unfortunately, in my area deer browse probably won’t be an issue so I’m going to just split my plot into sections and go something like 1 acre corn, 2 acres beans...

    Beans and…..

How big is your plot? Could you split it or alternate passes? And if you talk to your local seed guys they usually have test plot bags they don’t completely use.

    Spraying vs burning crp?

I agree with spraying, it’s much more forgiving. If you do it at the right time you will only kill what you want to kill.

    Cedar tree removal

I could kill a lot in a day with a drone if I found the right chemical, I’ve also been using it to kill brome and seed switchgrass.

Has anyone had any luck spraying them aerially?

    Cover crops for soil building

I did red clover, sweet clover, radishes, and volunteer winter wheat behind a winter wheat crop seeded in late July and went to corn the following year. The yield was significantly better than the rest of the field that didn’t get cover crop.

    Bedding area maintenance

I think I look forward to TSI as much as hunting itself. But sometimes I worry I’m going overboard? Last year I double girdled every basswood, bitternut hickory, elm, mulberry and hackberry leaving only oak and walnut on about half of one timber but they still put leaves on last summer. So this...

    Thermal Drones for deer surveys

I’m from the western part of the state that has been hit 4 of the last 4 years with EHD, sure wish there was a way to relocate those problem deer out here. I’m sure they would cry CWD about it though.

    Future of CRP

I agree, only thing I would add is that buffer along streams being a guaranteed qualifier. Because that dirt is usually very high csr.

    Future of CRP

Oh it doesn’t at all, I farm and do custom application for a living. I sprayed for a guy that tore everything he possibly could out , couldn’t figure out why he had a 2 acre cornfield on the steepest sidehill in a crp field until someone told me that 2 acres was timber when he put the rest of...
