    Nursery

I’d appreciate your keeping us updated on your project. I’m considering a big project in the next several years. Not as big as yours, but big for me. I’m interested if you’re planning on tubing them and who will do most of your labor.

    Nursery

I’ve been pleased with the Iowa State Nursery…different sizes of orders. It doesn’t hurt to place your order as soon as possible, as they occasionally have shortages. I’ve called them a couple of times and they will work with you.

Questions on minerals, garlic, EHD, and general stuff…

I’ve heard garlic and at least one brand of minerals mentioned as helping prevent EHD. How does that work and is there documented proof? I’ve heard from an expert that deer aren’t attracted to minerals after June. I’ve read it mentioned here that might not be the case everywhere or maybe with...

2 PIGS in ONE PIC- Rub post - Chase is on!!!!!

They’re everywhere in Northwest Mississippi. They’re hunted with dogs, shot and in fields with night scopes, from helicopters, etc. They’re smart, learn quickly from their mistakes, and reproduce like rabbits. If you see one or more, organize and get rid of every single one! Thinking you...

Looking for ideas on tree tubes…

I’ve been planting 25-75 and tubing them the last few years. I get about $7 each in them, if I’m careful to get free shipping. I have a large project in mind possibly. I always have projects in the works, small and pretty big (for me). I appreciate the replies.

    More on pheasants rebound...

I find Skip's discussion on the pheasant rebound he's seeing in his neighborhood interesting and encouraging! I've been visiting Iowa for 18 years. I had never seen a pheasant in the wild until traveling in Iowa. My close friend, Paul Knox, checked my trail cams years ago, and my favorite...

“I SHOULD BE ABLE TO HUNT MY LAND AS NR EVERY YEAR!!!”

This is a lazy way to make a couple of suggestions that I feel strongly about. I am a NR and understand where Skip's coming from. My suggestions are.... Avoid cross-bows as much as possible. Avoid rifles as much as possible. Avoid letting anyone bring hogs into Iowa. If you're aware of some...

    Brutal weather coming

We have a variety of food in our immediate neighborhood. One thing I did this year was plant some sorghum in an area we were hearing quails. We know the deer and turkeys have been hitting it. One thing I like about it is the deer didn't seem to have it at the very top of their favorite food...

    Honey bees

Also, bucket and sorghum attract honey bees around August, September, when nectar is not accessible as it is during the springtime. This is really important as food sources become somewhat scarce that time of year. Then golden rod becomes important.

    Honey bees

I enjoyed raising bees for 6-7 years but developed severe, life threatening allergies to their stings. After a few close calls I now take monthly allergy shots. I’m already off topic but beekeeping was the most interesting hobby I ever had. I learned last year that buckwheat and sorghum are...

    EHD

We don’t seem to be picking up a lot of new deer, but we tend to be hoping and looking for new mature bucks. We have excellent habitat, very little pressure, lots of food. It will be very interesting to see what shakes out after the winter storm(s) in the next couple of weeks.

    EHD

About 5 of us are fiends and have neighboring farms in Van Buren County. It seems we lost many of our mature bucks. Several were our best bucks. Overall numbers seem down considerably, also.

    Season over December 31

As a non-resident who has owned property in Iowa since 2006, I would hate to see the season close on December 31. Either my son or I try to draw a tag each year, and hunt after Christmas during the late muzzleloader season. This year my son hunted while I hung out with his two daughters, aged 7...

Recommendations for best hunting swivel chair?

I have several that I’ve left in blinds all year. So far, cross my fingers, they haven’t been bothered by the weather or varmints. They come apart easily into two parts and are pretty easy to carry. Very comfortable and after 3-5 years, they remain quiet. Zero squeaking.
